MW Design Dec 29, 2011 10:51 PM (in response to cyberbaffled)Make page 10 the start of a new section. Set its start number to 1.
Take care, Mike

Michael Gianino Dec 30, 2011 12:07 AM (in response to cyberbaffled)And don't forget to use a different master page for the first 10 that doesn't have a page-number placeholder.

You want 9 un-numbered (or different-numbered) pages and then start at '1'? That's pretty odd, because it would make odd pages appear at the left and even ones at the right. If this is for some sort of office document and to be loose-leafed, it's probably what you were asked to do. For any serious kind of publication, you need to insert an additional totally blank page (so no page number either) between the preamble and your first text page.

4. Re: beginning page numbering ten pages into a document
cyberbaffled Dec 30, 2011 11:51 AM (in response to MW Design)The difficulty resolves to the need to begin odd numbered pages on the left page of a spread. I understood the need to begin a new section but was frustrated by the connection between page number and page position. I will begin a new discussion specifying this problem. Following is the statement in the InDesign Help manual: "By default, the first page is a recto (right) page numbered 1. Odd-numbered pages always appear on the right;" Then the manual doesn't explain how to override the default. Thanks for your attention to this issue.

5. Re: beginning page numbering ten pages into a document
cyberbaffled Dec 30, 2011 11:54 AM (in response to [Jongware])The specific page I cited -10- was arbitrary. It could have been seven, twelve, or any other than two. Please see my reply to Mike.

P Spier Dec 30, 2011 11:55 AM (in response to cyberbaffled)Select the spread, then from the panel menu uncheck "allow selected spread to shuffle" to swap the number to the opposite page.

8. Re: beginning page numbering ten pages into a document
P Spier Dec 30, 2011 11:58 AM (in response to cyberbaffled)Athough preventing shuffling will allow you to put an odd number on the left, I don't think this is a particularly good idea. Is there a reason why you need facing pages, but don't want to foillow numbering convention and keep the odd pages all onthe right?
