flash player installation error failed to initialize

I have reviewed the forum posts regarding this error, tried the suggestions, and still can't get the flash player to install. And...by uninstalling my previous version, as instructed, I now have none....and am very frustrated. Please help. I have Windows XP and IE8. I checked the minimum systems requirements are ok.

Installation Encountered Errors "Failed to Initialize"

The Answer/reply there has a link that worked for me and I was having the exact same problem.
