Moving and copying files in Bridge v4.0.4.2

    DaveOR2 Community Member

CS5 Bridge crashes whenenver I try to move or copy files. It doesn't matter if I drag&drop or use copy/paste.

I have tried to correct using advice from a previous query made a couple of years ago but it does not improve the situation.

I am using Windows 7 with bags of memory.

I've never heard of this bug. I suspect this is nothing to do with Bridge, and is more likely Bridge reacting badly to a fault in the filing system.

If I were you, I'd do a full filing system integrity check, as well as looking at things like network/mapped drives, external drives and driver software, and maybe also anti-virus software - basically anything which modifies the behaviour of the operating system.

I agree with Yammer, it is probably not Bridge.  Most crashes are from drivers so make sure the video driver is up to date.

Also, your Bridge is an old version and should be updated as well.

If the above does not work look at the Event Log report.  See what the defaulting module shows.  That will be where the error lies.

              Thanks for both your contributions.

I have updated to latest version but problem is still there.

Unfortunately I don't have sufficient understanding of computers to carry out your detailed suggestions - although I have tried.

Mainly I don't know where to find the various things mentioned.

eg how do I do a ful system integrity check?

Perhaps I need to take the whole shebang to the shop and see if they can sort it out.

I can say that I have a fairly extensive range of software on the machine and it is only Bridge which is giving me trouble.

For the Event Log (also know as crash log) look in the Windows Help file or do a web search on how to use it.

Will have lots of unreadable data, but look for the line Defaulting Module.

Solution can be as simple as a conflict with anti-virus program.

It would help if we had a better idea of what drives/volumes you have on your computer, and how they are connected. For example: do you have any external hard drives? Do you have any network drives? Are your SATA drivers up-to-date?

It's fairly straightforward to check your disk integrity: open Windows Explorer, click Computer, and right click a drive, selecting Properties from the bottom of the list; on the Tools tab, click Check Now, then Start. Do this for every drive.

Try disconnecting your computer from the network and disabling your anti-virus software to see if that is causing your problem.

It is always worth updating graphics drivers, although it sound unlikely this is your problem. Maybe your system has driver update software?

You could ask the shop to help, but it might be wise to narrow down the problem first, or they could potentially spend hours looking at it.

The Event Viewer might be a good place to look too, look for red and yellow warnings in the Windows System and Application logs. Find Event Viewer by typing it into Start menu Search box.

                    Dear Yammer P

I have the usual drives A: (floppy - never used), C:-1TB hard drive, several USB ports (not connected when testing Bridge)

and one standby 500GB hard drive used as file backup connected via USB port.

We have an ethernet connection but Bridge still fails when I disconnect it.

I have done the disc integrity checks as suggested and they come up OK.

                    What are SATA drivers?

I have looked at the event viewer and there are a number of warnings, errors and Critical errors but they don't mean anything to me. If I go on line  Microsoft dosn't recognise them either!

I went into the control panel to see if I could locate the graphics driver but could not see anything that looked like one.

Under Action Center I found a panel which gave me details of Adobe Bridge CS5 Stopped working. It gave the date as Oct 2010! No mention of any later crashes though.

It said under Description "Faulty ApplicationPath" and referred to the Bridge exe path.

The problem signature then gave a long list of data which means nothing to me - but one line tells me the probelm event name was "APPCRASH"

It also gave a fault module name ntdll.dll. I know these files can give problems but I've no idea if this information is significant.

I don't know if any of this helps but there might be someone who can glean something from them.

Thanks once again for your help and interest.

                    Regards

                    DaveOR

You problem lies with the fault module ntdll.dll.  This is usually casued by drivers.  However, look at this thread where user had similar problem.  http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCEQFjAA&url=http%3A%2 F%2Fforums.adobe.com%2Fthread%2F695264&ei=iPUIT7HQIJDWiAKHzIy0CQ&usg=AFQjCNGP0NNLRueIv3p2t oHSyLn8Ok67Uw

Solution at post #5.  See if you had your collection panel closed as well.

That looks promising. Good call, Curt.

I really hope that Adobe devotes enough resources to fixing Bridge's many bugs. It often feels that it's treated like a bit of a forgotten add-on—which isn't really on for something which is supposed to be the "hub" of CS activity.

I'm also concerned that, if things are to be fixed properly, that it might not happen until CS6, if at all. This is very frustrating, as some of these bugs have been around for years.

I've had a few attempts at moving over to Lightroom, instead of Bridge/ACR, because of all the problems, but I just can't get used to it. Bridge suits me so much better. If Adobe could fix problems with metadata writes, preview generation, folder panel usability, full-screen sharpness, and general performance issues (64-bit anyone?), it would make life so much easier.

                          Yee Haa!!

                          Thanks a million Curt.

I opened the Collections folder as suggested and I can now drag and drop files without a crash. I hope it continues.

I don't really want the collections panel taking up screen space but will put up with it as long as I can move files about.

I was surprised to see I had a couple of Collections and I can only think they got there when I was experimenting with Lightroom.

I agree with Yammer, I didn't like Lightroom either so I went back to Bridge which does everything I want and is much more intuitive.

However Bridge is quite flakey - sometimes it refuses to show all my files and I have to close it and open it again - but when it works it is very good.

Does anyone from Adobe read these forums and take any (positive) action?

If you do not see some of your files, go to tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder.  That should bring it back to normal.

This forum does get some Adobe visitors, and on sticky problems have investigated and solved some problems.  But as I understand it this is more of a voluntary effort rather than an official action.

I think they are trying to make the feedback forum a more official complaints/suggestions arena.

Had never been to that site.  I know the old Feedback Forum was discontinued 2 weeks ago.

Don't understand the format of this site.  Is it a user forum, or does Adobe cull questions to put here?

There is no specific user here so, If you ask a question who will answer?

What kind of questions are they expecting here?

It's better designed for reporting and escalating problems and suggestions. It has a support-based text analyser, which looks at your question/statement and tries to find something similar in existence.

The idea is that it makes finding existing solutions easier, and enables users to +1 existing problems and suggestions. Additionally, if your problem seems new, you can start your own topic.

There are a large number of Adobe employees taking part officially, and they are able to moderate, move, and flag problems they can reproduce.
