Drop Shadow problem in PSE 10

    TucsonJeff1 Community Member

I am using PSE 10 for Windows. In my project, I have a background. On the background, I have two objects, each on their own separate layers. On one of the objects, I previously applied a drop shadow effect (Layer/Layer Style/Drop Shadow). Now I want to apply a drop shadow to the second object. So, I select the layer of the second object, and go to Layer/LayerStyle/Drop Shadow. However, all the drop shadow effects I apply to the second object are also being applied to the first object!! Again, I have only the second object selected at this point. I don’t want any further changes on the first object, just the second object. I had this same problem in a completely separate project. Is this a bug in the program, or am I doing something wrong?

      Thanks!!

In the Layers pallet right click on the fx symbol and choose clear layer style. That will remove the drop shadow that you don’t want.

You mean the Global Lighting angle seems the same?

Imho it's a bug put into the elements program on purpose starting with photoshop elements 5.

Instead of using Layer>Layer Style>Style Settings, try a drop shadow from the effects panel (Window>Effects).

              Hi, 99jon -

I never wanted to delete the pre-existing drop shadow from the first

object. I just wanted to add a drop shadow to the second object (but I'm

glad you pointed out how I could do this easily if I wanted to).

However, some light was shed on this subject with another response I

received from R_Kelly. (S)he asked if I was referring to the Global

Lighting angle. I checked it out and found that, yes, the Global

Lighting angle was the only attribute that was affected. S(he) said that

this phenomenon was an intentional "bug" that first appeared in PSE 5.

And, actually, after thinking about it, it sort of makes sense. If you

have two objects in the same picture, it's more than likely that both

objects are going to be subject to the same lighting angle (unless you

have two or more lamps with objects on either side).

Thanks again, 99jon, for your quick response! I appreciate your help.

                Hi, R_Kelly -

Yes, you're right! It's just the Global Lighting angle that seems to

change on all objects. Okay, so I tried your suggestion

(Windows/Effects), and it totally solved the problem. Thanks so much for

                your help!
