1. Re: Opening an Indesign file from server slows down [very urgent please]
John Hawkinson Jan 31, 2012 1:28 AM (in response to Green4ever)Try opening the second file (the one that the first file links to) first, then with it still open, open the problem file. Does that help?
Maybe you should ask your network administrators for help? Possibly restore your file from backups?

2. Re: Opening an Indesign file from server slows down [very urgent please]
Green4ever Jan 31, 2012 2:36 AM (in response to John Hawkinson)I restored all my indesign file in the same folder structure except the root folder. I already tried the way you suggested. It is not helping me.
"I thought that may be Indesign is searching for the missing links" So I try editing the preferences so that indesign will not search for the missing links(I think it is only aplicable for graphic links is it?). After that also I am facing the same problem.
Is there anyway to open the indesign file without checking for missing hyperlinks. So that it may open faster.
Thanks,
Green4ever

P Spier Jan 31, 2012 5:32 AM (in response to Green4ever)It sounds to me like the problem is the new server path, and hopefully once the files are corrected and resaved so everything points to the new path (and I don't do hyperlinks, so I'm not sure, but you may have to fix them all manually) and the files are saved you should be back to normal.
John may have some thoughts about a script that can do the path corrections for you, though.

Green4ever Jan 31, 2012 5:36 AM (in response to P Spier)Hi Peter and John,
If it is a graphic link I am able to do this very easily. But I don't how to do the path corrections for hyperlinks. Is it possible by java script? If yes please give the idea where to start and i'll try it myself.
Thanks,

5. Re: Opening an Indesign file from server slows down [very urgent please]
John Hawkinson Jan 31, 2012 6:14 PM (in response to Green4ever)While it is possible, I suspect you're better off exporting to IDML, opening the IDML, and looking for the path references that are problematic, and perhaps fixing them with global-search-and-replace. Remember IDML is a zipped archive, so unzip it first.

Green4ever Feb 1, 2012 2:42 AM (in response to John Hawkinson)Hi John,
I tried it yesterday but I cannot open the idml back in Indesign. It says file format doesn't support.
Then today again I tried it and got success. Yesterday I used 7zip to unzip and zip, it fails. Then today the same I tried using win xp's compress method. Really is there any problem in 7zip application?
Note: I used Epsilon to edit the xml. I hope it doesn't have any problem in dealing with the xml.
Thanks,
Green4ever

7. Re: Opening an Indesign file from server slows down [very urgent please]
John Hawkinson Feb 1, 2012 2:44 AM (in response to Green4ever)They should both work fine, though I've heard of some people having problems with WinXP's compression.
Did you make sure the folder structure was exactly the same? Multiple files in the toplevel, not all in one directory, etc.?

Green4ever Feb 1, 2012 2:55 AM (in response to John Hawkinson)I'm sure the folder structure was same in both the cases. If there is no problem with 7zip I have to give it one more try for testing it.

Green4ever Feb 1, 2012 6:32 AM (in response to Green4ever)Oops... I'm sorry. 7zip also working fine. I did the mistake while zipping. Thank you John and Peter.
