I'm having exactly the same problem! HELP! I can't even "open" a file and Freehand quits!
Uh oh! Me three! HELP!!!!
If you want to keep using FreeHand DO NOT apply the latest Apple security update (2012-001) for Snow Leopard
me four....it has to be the security update...oh no.
I had to re-install OS 10.6.4 and then do all the updates except the last Security Update, so I was eventually back up to 10.6.8. Took about 4 hours. Next time I'll have a backup to use instead. It might take less time...
This is affecting any Rosetta applications, not only FreeHand, from what I am reading. Besides the Apple Communities link above, discussion of this on Free FreeHand is here: http://freefreehand.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=654
So far, a solution is looking like getting a replacement framework that can be downloaded on the french macbidouille.com site
Replace the defective folder "ImageIO.framework" found in: "/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices\.framework/Versions/A/Framework s" in the Finder and then fix your permissions.
Apple has now released an updated version 1.1 of the Security Update 2012-001 (v.1.1) that resolves Rosetta/PowerPC application issues:

I installed the corrected Security Update, and everything appears to be working properly now. Freehand "Opens", "Saves" and "Saves As" like it should. Problem solved! I assume other Rosetta-dependant apps are also workng for those people using them.
