1. Re: Nested style not staying applied
P Spier Feb 9, 2012 10:36 AM (in response to mattaca)I can't tell what text is being reported because you haven't selected and there is no cursor visible, but if its supposed to be the text in the screen capture you have [Basic Paragraph], not your recipe step style, assigned.

Jeffrey_Smith Feb 9, 2012 10:37 AM (in response to mattaca)Can you repost your example of text with "Show hidden characters" enabled?

Jeffrey_Smith Feb 9, 2012 10:41 AM (in response to P Spier)Peter, what makes you think Basic is applied?

4. Re: Nested style not staying applied
P Spier Feb 9, 2012 10:46 AM (in response to Jeffrey_Smith)Look at the screen cap of the panel. It's listed as the applied style in the area above the list.

6. Re: Nested style not staying applied
mattaca Feb 9, 2012 12:07 PM (in response to P Spier)[Basic Paragraph] was showing in the Paragraph Styles panel because no text was selected and that is the document's default style.

7. Re: Nested style not staying applied
mattaca Feb 9, 2012 12:08 PM (in response to mattaca)It's also interesting to note that it retains the size of the nested style but not the font. I'm stumped.

8. Re: Nested style not staying applied
P Spier Feb 9, 2012 12:18 PM (in response to mattaca)Can you show us the nested styles are of the style definition?
I do suspect though that it's file corruption, or possibly bad prefs. Start with Remove minor corruption by exporting
If that doesn't solve it, see Replace Your Preferences

9. Re: Nested style not staying applied
mattaca Feb 9, 2012 12:27 PM (in response to P Spier)Here are the nested styles, Peter. One thing I failed to mention is that i have both CS4 and CS5 on my machine. Could that cause any problems like this?
I'll try trashing prefs. If I export to .inx then open and save over the .indd, will that cause any problems with Incopy stories that still exist in the file?
I appreciate your help.

10. Re: Nested style not staying applied
[Jongware] Feb 9, 2012 12:36 PM (in response to mattaca)Not helpful but at least I can confirm this erratic behavior for CS4 (and that way before CS5 even existed). I usually saw this happen when copying some text with a nested style, and pasting it into a new texframe. All your symptoms were there -- still applied, but the to-be-styled text loses its font style formatting and gains a '+' in the paragraph panel.
Now this is funny 'cause I started typing this post in the present sense, but then it occurred to me there have been many moons since I saw this last happen. Back then I reported it as a bug to Adobe, Perhaps the very latest CS4 updates fixed it for me.

11. Re: Nested style not staying applied
P Spier Feb 9, 2012 12:37 PM (in response to mattaca)DON'T overwrite the old file. Save with a new name after the export. I don't think it casue any trouble with InCopy, but I don't know for sure.
Have you considered making the numbering a numbered list, and applying the style as part of the number specifications?

12. Re: Nested style not staying applied
lilia@ Feb 9, 2012 12:38 PM (in response to mattaca)Question... do you have Next Style changing to another in the General Pane?
Looks to me that that might be the issue. I ask this because it's only your first paragraph that has the style applied.

14. Re: Nested style not staying applied
mattaca Feb 9, 2012 12:49 PM (in response to P Spier)We don't use numbered lists. I'm always afraid of letting InDesign do the work for me because I don't know if the numbers will look correct when I save/export to another format. Same with bullets.
I'll save to a different name if I go the .inx route. Anyone else know whether this will negatively affect InCopy stories?

15. Re: Nested style not staying applied
mattaca Feb 9, 2012 12:51 PM (in response to [Jongware])I'm definitely on the latest version. Just double-checked. Glad to know I'm not the only person who's experienced this! (Hooray, I'm not crazy!)

16. Re: Nested style not staying applied
lilia@ Feb 9, 2012 12:58 PM (in response to mattaca)Could be a corrupted frame... have you tried making a new frame and reimporting the text (not copy/paste)?

17. Re: Nested style not staying applied
mattaca Feb 9, 2012 1:10 PM (in response to mattaca)OK, exported to .inx and opened it as Untitled-1. No change.
Trashed prefs and opened file again. No change.
Reimporting text is not an option at this point. This book has arleady gone through edit read, proofread, and final approvals. It goes to press next week.
Ugh. Looks like I'm just going to have to clear out the overrides and hope the changes stick?

18. Re: Nested style not staying applied
mattaca Feb 9, 2012 1:26 PM (in response to mattaca)Out of curiosity, I decided to do a Find/Change for the Paragraph Style RECIPE STEP and replaced it with the Paragraph Style RECIPE STEP. Interestingly, I actually fixed the nested style when I would click Change. It makes me wonder if something in InDesign wasn't recognizing the paragraphs as having that style applied?
For purposes of closure, I'm going to mark the thread as answered, even though we didn't discover the technical issue causing the problem. I think is just a bug (not a feature).
