How do I improve Repousse quality?

    RFDPiper Community Member

I'm having difficulty using the repousse technique to create 3D text.  When I do it, it results in aweful jagged lettering.  Is there a setting to fix this?  I'm new to PhotoShop, I work primarily on Premiere Pro and After Effects.

      Thanks

After you've made your object in Repousse, go to Window->3D, make sure that in the top row the left most button is selected and from there the top most item is selected (called Scene). Now change the Quality dropdown to either Ray Traced Draft or Final and wait until the flying squares finish their thing.

Aside from what Zeno said about the rendering quality settings, consider how you create the actual geometry. The size at which the text is created in relation to the document DPI strangely enough matters and affects the tesselation pattern produced, meaning how smooth the curves are divcided into triangles. Making text a bit bigger often helps, but going too big does not yield any extra benefits. Because of that, also the typeface selectiion matters. Sometimes you will even find that because the font is poorly designed you will get weird geometry. In that case basing the extrusion on a selection from the text or converting it to paths and cleaning those paths up a little might work better...

Thanks for your help.  One thing I couldn't figure out is how to make changes once the Repousse is applied.  Is there a way to change the font so that I can try one that works without starting over with new text?

You can re-enter the Repoussé panel by choosing the respective function in the Repoussé sub-menu with teh 3D layer selected. You can't change text on the fly, though. If you want a specific look, save a preset in Repoussé, then apply it to different text layers.
