Transfer Lightroom3 Files from PC to Mac ?

    soloalpinist Community Member

I'm currently getting ready to use Lightroom3 on a PC, but I anticipate switching to a Mac in the future. Is there anything I should do in terms of setting up my files, folders etc now in the PC to facilitate the move to Mac later on?  I will be storing my photos on an External Hard drive.

If you store all your images on an external hard drive (as I do), in the future you will just install Lightroom on a Mac and plug-in the hard drive and Lightroom will detect it.

One importat thing to remember is your Catalogue. If you store it on the internal hard drive, you'll need to move it to a new machine (you can just launch Lightroom on a Mac by clicking on a Lightroom catalogue).

If you keep your Catalogue on the external hard drive with your images, you connect the hard drive to Mac and click on the Catalogue file to launch Lightroom, as simple as that!

If you create your own presets, you'll need to move them with you.

Note that if your external drive is formatted NTFS, the Mac can read from it but not write to it. To share a disk between PC and Mac, it needs to be formatted FAT32.
