I have a 22-inch (1680x1050) monitor. Most of the time I want to publish my recording to a 600x800 video. So there are several approaches:

1. Record it as 1400x1050, and resize it as 600x800 after recording.

2. Record it as 600x800, and use panning.

3. Do not use the large external monitor. Use the laptop monitor to record it as 600x800.

In my situation, which one is the best?

You do not need a small monitor, you can choose the resolution and a region of 800x600. I always capture in 800x600 on my laptop screen that is 1600x900

If possible, best quality is retained if you capture at the final resolution. Downscaling, if you keep the width/height ratio can lead to an acceptable result, but will everything not be too tiny, compared with panning?

Yes, if I record it large, and downscale it, it will be too tiny. Sometimes I use panning, but the audience will miss the bigger picture.

Therefore, I think the best way is to use a small monitor and record the simulation in 800x600 window.
