1. Re: rendering vs. encoding?
JSS1138 Feb 25, 2012 11:11 AM (in response to Tom Mullica)The short answer is that in most cases, it's better to skip the render and just go directly to export.

2. Re: rendering vs. encoding?
Tom Mullica Feb 25, 2012 11:14 AM (in response to JSS1138)thanks, Jim. From what I've read, when you playback a section of your timeline (with various effects) before rendering, it may not be 'smooth'. You should render that section to see what the finished product will look like. I APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSE.

3. Re: rendering vs. encoding?
JSS1138 Feb 25, 2012 1:14 PM (in response to Tom Mullica)If you need to see smooth playback, you can certainly render. But it's not needed for export. And even when you do prerender, it's still often best not to use those renders during export. (Uncheck the Use Preview Files checkbox.)

Is that USE PREVIEW FILES checkbox in the export setting screen?

6. Re: rendering vs. encoding?
Powered by Design Feb 25, 2012 1:30 PM (in response to Tom Mullica)Its in the export settings.
One of the reasons to NOT use the preview files is because Premiere can use different codecs for the rendering and if you use a different one for export then things get messed up. Im not to familiar with it but that is what I think I remember from what I read.

9. Re: rendering vs. encoding?
Rallymax-forum Feb 27, 2012 7:57 PM (in response to Tom Mullica)"Rendering" is the process of making each uncompressed frame
"Encoding" is the process of compressing an uncompressed (raw) video into a decodable stream of video information (eg mpeg-intra, h.264/avc or DV).
IF the Edit Mode is non uncompressed (eg dv or mpeg-intra) whne you do a Preview it will RENDER and then ENCODE to the Editing Mode's compression scheme (MPEG-I,DV etc) and then save that, not the raw uncompressed image into a temporary file.
When you EXPORT (directly or via Queue to Adobe Media Encoder) you are actually "Exporting".
If your Export plugin is a a "Smart Renderer" AND the output settings are the same as the Editing Mode format it will _copy_ the above Render+Encode if it exists otherwise it will ASK Adobe to RENDER a raw uncompressed frame.
SO... Since it's all the same thing - just go straight to EXPORTING. There is no need to pre-RENDER since the EXPORTER will ask for it anyhow.
'hope that helps.
Edward.
