P Spier Mar 1, 2012 9:11 AM (in response to Arrow'd)Waht are your downsampling and compression settings? I suspect that's where the problem is coming in. You might want to try changing to Zip compression, or turn it off completely.

Arrow'd Mar 1, 2012 11:34 AM (in response to P Spier)Here are the current compression settings:

These were developed with input from our print vendors. These settings worked consistenly and didn't cause any trouble on their end.
I tested it without the zip compression, there was no change in the PDF.

emmysue32 Mar 1, 2012 12:02 PM (in response to Arrow'd)...just curious... is there an .ai of the logo available, and does it behave the same way?

Arrow'd Mar 1, 2012 12:29 PM (in response to emmysue32)There is an ai of that particular logo available (and does not behave the same way) but the weird bitmap effect occurs on literally hundreds of logos that are coming from Photoshop.
To add to the amusement; the ai versions of logos are now giving us some grief as well. Feel free to check out that issue here:

5. Re: Placed logos pixelated in CS5
rob day Mar 1, 2012 12:47 PM (in response to Arrow'd)What are the effective resolutions of the two versions? If the 100% version is at or under 300ppi there would be no downsampling on the export but the 85% version would push the resolution over 300ppi and you would get a downsample on export. Try exporting with sampling turned off, or increase the threshold to something like 400ppi.

6. Re: Placed logos pixelated in CS5
emmysue32 Mar 1, 2012 1:38 PM (in response to Arrow'd)was this ai an eps at any point? (sorry, I know I'm getting off topic. Just throwing it out there, since I'm thinking that would be the ultimate solution; to use .ai instead of raster.)

7. Re: Placed logos pixelated in CS5
Arrow'd Mar 1, 2012 2:31 PM (in response to rob day)The 300dpi threshold is part of our print vendors battery of requirements.
Going over means they adjust the file on their end to work with their equipment, they bill us for the time they spend "fixing" the file and there may be a color shift we don't want since we have multiple packages going to different shops (same owner, different print facilities) and they all need to match across the brand.

MW Design Mar 1, 2012 2:35 PM (in response to Arrow'd)Is it at all possible to see a sample file, just one that demonstrates the issue?

9. Re: Placed logos pixelated in CS5
rob day Mar 1, 2012 2:46 PM (in response to Arrow'd)So turning off sampling solves the problem?
300 ppi is an arbitrary resolution threshold. There are cases where it's not enough like logos and text—you effectively have colored line art. If you care about the pixelated line you can't allow downsampling.

10. Re: Placed logos pixelated in CS5
Arrow'd Mar 1, 2012 2:47 PM (in response to emmysue32)The logo in the demonstration was an Illustrator file at one point.
I rasterized it and used it for demonstration and testing purposes only.
The file where we originally found the problem cannot be shown outside the company.
Aside from that, we build a huge percentage of our logos in Photoshop to take advantage of textures, effects and so on.
Though it may seem counter-intuitive, it is easier to add those same effects to the translated versions of those logos if it is a layer effect in Photoshop, rather than rebuilding it in Illustrator for 9 more languages.

11. Re: Placed logos pixelated in CS5
Arrow'd Mar 1, 2012 3:51 PM (in response to rob day)Turning off the downsampling does indeed appear to fix the problem.
It looks like I will now need to work with the printers now to develop a new set of export settings.
Thank you.
