1. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
Steve Werner Mar 13, 2012 7:59 AM (in response to JomThreethousand)You're mixing up concepts here.
When you say "ebook", usually that means an EPUB file, but ebook EPUB readers don't support buttons (maybe some using JavaScript).
Or, are you meaning PDF files bcause you're talking about previewing it in Acrobat X. But do you realize that most PDF readers on the iPad don't support buttons either. See by blog posting here: For Interactive PDF, Not All Readers Are Equal
Or, are you talking about the Adobe Digital Publishing system which you would talk about in the DPS forum.
Can you tell what workflow you're trying to use, please.

2. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
JomThreethousand Mar 13, 2012 8:09 AM (in response to Steve Werner)Ok, so I don't mean ebook. I want to make an interactive pdf(with Indesign) that will be shown trough Adobe Reader on a specifically installed Windows computer with a touch screen.
The issue is this rollover state that seems to be some system default annoying dashed line that interferes with my design. My question is: can this be hidden?

Steve Werner Mar 13, 2012 8:15 AM (in response to JomThreethousand)Can you post a file for us to look at, please. I can't get what the problem is by looking at that screen capture.

4. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
JomThreethousand Mar 13, 2012 8:24 AM (in response to Steve Werner)As far as I've seen, any button in a pdf will show a dashed rectangle around the limits of the button on a click, as shown on the screenshot. On a mac I've seen a transparent grey rectangle.
This is not my file but will show the very same thing, (and as far as I've seen this is a default event): http://gilbertconsulting.com/pdf/Build_tool_tips_in_InDesign.pdf
Thanks already for your attention!

5. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
Jeffrey_Smith Mar 13, 2012 8:24 AM (in response to JomThreethousand)The unwanted dashed line happens in Acrobat around buttons when there is an effect like transparency, bevel and emboss, outer glow, etc.applied to the button in Indesign. Removing the effect will eliminate the dashed line. You may be able to recreate the state appearance without the effects and see if this prevents the dashed line.

6. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
Steve Werner Mar 13, 2012 8:31 AM (in response to Jeffrey_Smith)I see what you mean in the link JomThreethousand posted. Jeffrey is probably correct. I've seen that subtle outline so often I just accept it as one of the ways that Acrobat/Reader display buttons. I don't particularly find it offensive. Each display system has its quirks and that's one of Acrobat/Reader's.

7. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
Jeffrey_Smith Mar 13, 2012 8:46 AM (in response to Steve Werner)I just noticed something, I removed the effects from a button, but the dashed line is still there in Acrobat. The dashed line appears, but is pretty much the same size of the button, and in this case not as noticeable.

8. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
JomThreethousand Mar 13, 2012 8:50 AM (in response to Steve Werner)I tried making a button out of a plain solid colored rectangle but will still get the dashed outline.
Offcourse this line is so default you will hardly notice it in most occasions. In my occasion as described in te original post however, it is a quite disctracting vertical line trough the image.

omri Malis Jul 2, 2012 4:18 PM (in response to JomThreethousand)Hello Jom...
did u find a solution for the dotted OUTLINE around a button while click on it? (while watching it at PDF viewer)
it is really annoying...

10. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
Steve Werner Jul 2, 2012 4:28 PM (in response to omri Malis)Nothing has changed in InDesign or in Acrobat that would affect button display.

omri Malis Jul 2, 2012 4:45 PM (in response to Steve Werner)thank u steve,
u mean that this :
"I see what you mean in the link JomThreethousand posted. Jeffrey is probably correct. I've seen that subtle outline so often I just accept it as one of the ways that Acrobat/Reader display buttons. I don't particularly find it offensive. Each display system has its quirks and that's one of Acrobat/Reader's"
is still the answer?

12. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
Steve Werner Jul 2, 2012 5:01 PM (in response to omri Malis)To the best of my knowledge. You could ask on the Acrobat forums, because it's an Acrobat issue. There may be a workaround I haven't heard of.

13. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
JomThreethousand Jul 3, 2012 1:43 AM (in response to omri Malis)My workaround was to export the presentation from Indesign as a SWF Flash file, which does not have this dotted line. Off course that will not be a suitable alternative in most occasions.
I guess it's something in the native structure of PDF. Hopefully they can get rid of it in new versions.

Bob Levine Jul 3, 2012 6:51 AM (in response to JomThreethousand)I do not profess to be an expert here but I was under the impression that this was an accessability issue.
You'll find a similar issue on the web when tabbing through nav lists.

15. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
NicolasLeclair Dec 24, 2012 9:18 AM (in response to Bob Levine)I have found one interesting answer from John Waller that seems to apply :
« It's called a "focus rectangle" and it's an accessibility feature of modern
browsers to show those who are navigating your site with a keyboard where
the focus is on the page e.g. if the dots appear on the Submit button the
user knows that pressing Enter will submit the form. »

16. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
Des Behan Feb 22, 2013 11:57 AM (in response to NicolasLeclair)Feature can be disabled in PDF by going to Acrobat Preferences/Forms and toggling off "Show focus rectangle".

17. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
mowglivj Nov 7, 2014 8:26 AM (in response to Des Behan)I'm having the same issue and "show focus rectangle" doesn't resolve it. "Show focus rectangle" toggles a transparent blue box that appears over radio buttons but not the dotted line which appears AFTER clicking on a button. A solution to this would be great. I tried exporting as swf and the boxes disappear but my radio buttons stop working, its a frustrating game of whack-a-mole.

18. Re: Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines
Bob Levine Nov 7, 2014 8:30 AM (in response to mowglivj)If it’s what I think it is, it’s an accessibility thing. You’ll get more help in the Acrobat forum than you will here. This has nothing to do with InDesign.
