Ps CS6 slower than Ps CS5

    jose_torres_2

I work with multiple layers on a .psd document quite frequently and I occasionally have to select and move multiple layers as well. As I do that on Ps CS6, I notice that movement is very choppy and much slower than on CS5. Is there a way to optimize this? I'm using Ps CS6 beta on a Windows 7 Enterprise PC with 8gb ram, Intel Core2 Quad Core 2.5GHz processor and a ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card if that helps.

Try disabling OpenGL drawing in preferences, then restarting Photoshop.

CS6 shouldn't be any slower, but we did add more GPU support and could be hitting bugs in video drivers.

Also, it would be a good idea to update your video card driver from the ATI web site.

Thanks for the input Chris Cox, unless if the option is moved, I do not see the option to disable Open GL as you receommended (I went to where Ps CS5 has it in Edit > Preferences > Graphics Processor Settings). I will look for video card driver updates and go from there...

Same spot, but now labelled "Use Graphics Processor".

I am on Winodws 7 (64 Bit) and  so far I can't see that Photoshop CS6 is slower than PS5. Even more,  CS6 is sugnificantly  faster.

Chris Cox: I've done what you have suggested, but it hasnt' worked. I've updated drivers from AMD and have disabled the "Use Graphics Processor/Open GL" option but still no change. I have even selected  Basic, Normal and Advanced and toggled the different options in the "Advanced Graphics Processor Settings" but still no change.

Every time I select a layer and try to move it, it sticks in place until maybe a few seconds later. Then movement is very choppy and NOT continuous. When I move multiple layers, movement is much worse!

HELP!!! I realize that these files may be heavy in size (300mb+ per file) but Ps CS5 handled them with few issues, why can't Ps CS6?

Have you fully configured CS6 for RAM use, and to use your proper scratch drive?

Well, we don't know why your machine is showing choppy redraws or taking so much time -- that isn't happening for most people.

Someone from QE will need to follow up with you and figure out what is going wrong with your system.

Noel Carboni: Yes, Ps CS6 is set to utilize 4.999gb of Ram which is 69% availability, this is on the high end of the "Ideal Range" that is recommended by the program and am using 100gb of available scratch disk space.

Chris Cox:  I've selected "Tall And Thin" under "History And Cache". Performance isn't as bad and slow but the choppy movement is still there, so it is now somewhat useful. Ps CS4 and CS5 have been used on this machine and not had this issue in either versions when properly configured, so I'm still somewhat baffled to what may be preventing better performance. If a fix is found that can optimize speed, I'll post it as soon as I have it. Thanks so much for the feedback!

                            Aaron,

I see that you are running dual monitors (or one external + your laptop), is the performance bad on both monitors or just one?  Also do you have Rulers showing for your documents?

                            Thanks,

                            Adam

                              Hi Adam,

I was using the dual monitors prior to the upgrade from PhotoShop CS5 to PhotoShop CS 6 Beta which was the basis for my comparison.

                              That said:

                              • I normally *do* display rulers, though turning them off does not seem to make a big difference
                              • The jerkiness of scrolling and changing tools might be *slightly* less when only using my laptop monitor, but not much
                              • The files I'm working on these days are about 90MB and contain almost 400 layers. Combine that with a 2560x1440 display and a 1680x1050 display with a 256MB mobile graphics card and I presume I'm starting to push it a little
                              • In PhotoShop -> Preferences -> Performance -> Graphics Processor Settings -> Advanced Settings I've tried a few diff settings and didn't notice a difference so I left it on "Normal". "Use Graphice Processor to Accelerate Computation" and "Use OpenCL" are grayed out on my machine.

                              Cheers.

Wanted to chime in to say that I'm also experiencing noticeable sluggishness compared to CS5.5

                                Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50)

                                Hardware:

                                Processor  2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

                                Memory  10 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB

I work with 2 monitors (1920x1200 & 1600x1200) and almost always have rulers displayed.

As the original poster mentioned, where I'm seeing the biggest hiccups is when I have multiple layers selected and I'm either trying to nudge with keyboard, or move with the mouse the selected layers.

I did forget to mention that I too am using 2 monitors, both with a 1920 x 1080 HD resolution. Both exhibit the same choppyness when moving layers (If I place Ps CS6 on the second screen).

I also have these problems, nudging multiple layers using the arrow keys takes around 5-7 seconds for 1 (px) nudge. Moving the same layer group using the mouse is almost impossible, the lag is enourmous.

The file is actually quite small (~15MB), but there are some layers in it.

                                    Rulers are visible.

EDIT: Interestingly, this only happens when using the arrow keys with the move tool. When hitting CMT+T and then changing x and y values directly or even with the arrow keys (up and down) speed is almost on par with CS5.

Also - turning on and off visibility has about a half second lag.

This is the case on a file i'm bringing in from cs5.5 that's 1200x1600, weighs in at 207.5 MB and has roughly 200 or so layers with all kinds of smart objects, shape layers, raster layers, adjustment layers, etc.

Can someone do me a favor and take a file that performs well in CS5 (or CS5.5) and re-save the file in CS6?  Re-open the newer file created in CS6 and see if the performance problems persist.

                                        Thanks,

As one who decided to dive right in and use PhotoShop CS6 Beta for production work I can say that I've done this and the problems persist and can be pronounced.

Does the new x/y indicator next to the cursor require lots of maths if you are moving multiple items? Many of my moves are groups that contain multiple layers and it puts some serious hurt on my machine--and I have 8GB of RAM and an SSD drive.

One more thing to try - hide the layers palette (just switch to the channels palette) and see if performance is better.  We've got a few performance threads we're trying to follow here on the forums and I need to know if the two issues are related.

                                            Thanks again,

                                              Well that is interesting!

Turning off the layers palette greatly improves the performance. I can actually see my layers move while I'm dragging them!

Bummer that you have to have the palette on to select the layers to move, but I'm sure you guys/gals will get that worked out.

                                              Thx.

And yet another thing to try:  go to the layers palette and choose Panel options... from the flyout menu.  Change thumbnail size to "None" and try this again with the Layers palette showing.  Still seeing a performance hit?

                                                Thanks again,

Turning off thumbnails provides a similarly massive improvement in performace to turning off the visibility of the layers palette.

                                                    Hi Adam -

Closing the layer palette and/or selecting "none" for thumbnail size in the panel options made a huge difference.

I had already opened a previously well-performing file in cs5.5 - saved it in a cs6, restarted cs6 and opened the file again. Performance was the same.

Pressing tab to hide all panels and then moving stuff around also seems to perform well.

let us know if we should try anything else.

Seems to be the Thumbnails - disabling them/hiding the layer palette significantly increases the performance for me.

yeah having the same issue aswell, seems like most people are. Used cs6 at work, moving multiple pictures on different layers around and it is reeeeally slow compared to cs5. Like a near deal breaker.   I hope adobe fixes this before the full release, hiding layers panel/thumbnail is only solution for now i suppose.

I'm also seeing the huge performance issues with moving multiple layers. And I also saw a huge performance increase (not quite on par with cs5, but close) when I disabled thumbnails in the layer palette.

                                                            Bryce Howitson

One more wrench to throw into the mix. I'm seeing the same lag issue as discussed here on my Mac (quad core i7 2.8Ghz, 12GB Ram, Radeon HD 4850, OSX 10.6.8). Using a large file 55mb with lots of layers (web interface) the system lags so much that I see no change for several minutes when dragging a layer group and sometimes even get a beachball at the system level.

As a quick note: hiding the thumbnails in the layers pallet did help with performance but its by no means ideal even with that tweak.

The funny thing is that the exact same file sees much less of a performance impact on my Windows box (Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, AMD Phenom 2 x6 3.0Ghz, 16GB Ram, Radeon HD 4890). Typically my experience is opposite of that with the Mac performing slightly better. I usually assume that the AMD chip isn't quite as good at single threaded applications as the i7 but performs very well for heavily multi-threaded apps. Is there a chance we're seeing PS's multi threading come into play? I would think GPU and Ram differences between my two setups would be neglibable espcially with the slightly less efficiant Windows OS taking more resources.

Let me know if there are other things you'd like tested. I'd love to get this issue figured out since its currently a deal breaker for me to be a viable upgrade.

I think I figured out something else with respect to this issue. I am having the same performance problems with moving layers and panning around my document. When space panning around a large comp I realized that performance is VASTLY improved if I close any panel that is floating on top of the actual canvas itself. Doesn't matter if it's the layers panel, the character panel, etc - if there is a panel that is floating on top of my document - I get a huge performance / display redraw hit. If all pannels are docked or hidden, everything performs better.

PS has 10 Go of RAM and I do webdesign, it is the first time I have to wait for moving layers.

Right now moving a group of 60 layers (text and vector) from 1 pixels to one direction takes up to 10 seconds.
