1. Re: tool menu shortcuts won't work
P Spier Mar 26, 2012 9:31 AM (in response to cyberbaffled)No Alt, unless you set them up that way in a custom shortcut (which means they don't wok too well in text mode)

2. Re: tool menu shortcuts won't work
Manish-Sharma Mar 26, 2012 10:38 AM (in response to cyberbaffled)As peter said...no alt and no ctrl..
every tool has its own default shortcut...
refer to the link :-http://help.adobe.com/en_US/indesign/cs/using/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-7016a.h tml
If you want to use the the Alt and Ctrl then you have to customise the shortcut.

4. Re: tool menu shortcuts won't work
cyberbaffled Mar 26, 2012 7:21 PM (in response to Manish-Sharma)Yes, I found that link. But for tools it only gives letters: T, H, etc.. There has to be some keystroke before the letter stroke or I only get a letter on my page of text; not activation of a tool. It's that keystroke preceding the letter I'm trying to determine.

5. Re: tool menu shortcuts won't work
Steve Werner Mar 26, 2012 9:50 PM (in response to cyberbaffled)You can't call out Tool single-letter keyboard shortcuts when you're in text. But you can when you don't have the Text tool selected. Like when the Black Arrow (Selection) tool is active.
And you can assign a letter+modifier shortcut when you choose Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts, and that would work when we're in text (as others have pointed out above).

6. Re: tool menu shortcuts won't work
P Spier Mar 27, 2012 5:13 AM (in response to cyberbaffled)Another possibility besides making custom shortcuts (and that might be best, by the way -- you can restrict them to the text context) would be to hit Esc to switch to the selection tool, then use the one letter shortcut of your choice.
There are some other shorcuts that will work while in text mode, Ctrl temporarily activates the Selection tool until you release it, and Alt + Spacebar gets you the Hand tool temporarily (in CS5 it appears that Alt by itself even works). Ctrl + numpad + or Ctrl + = on the alpha pad will zoom in, Ctrl + - -n either pad zooms out.

7. Re: tool menu shortcuts won't work
Manish-Sharma Mar 27, 2012 6:09 AM (in response to cyberbaffled)In Indesign when you are in the text box and writing something and then you choose the keyborad shortcut then it will insert that letter in the text box.
Hence in such situation either you can customize the keyboard shortcuts of indesign tools , refer to the link:-
http://creativebits.org/indesign/use_indesign_tool_shortcuts_while_editing_text
But also you can refer to the below mentioned link (a pdf file to download) in which there is the list of the keybord shortcut that can be used while you are in the text box and editing text.
