Green 5400 RPM drives do not work with video editing
My 3 hard drives are configured as...
1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and all program installs
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 paging swap file and video project files
When I create a project on #2 drive, the various work files follow,
so my boot drive is not used for the media cache folder and files
3 - 1Terabyte data for all video files... input & output files (*)
(*) for 4 drives, drive 3 all source files & drive 4 all output files
Search Microsoft to find out how to redirect your Windows paging swap file

Thanks for helping John,
I am still learning about specific brands but I think I nearly understand.
I have a pretty small set up, mostly editing short videos from DSLRs.
If I'm happy with my C: drive:
-Can I set up 2/3 WD caviar blacks as individual disks?
-What's the best way to back them up?
-Is the green drive still useless?
-Is this even close to a step in the right direction?
Use a smallish disk for OS & programs, something like a Samsung 320 GB Spinpoint F4 and use 2 WD Caviar Blacks as D: and E: drives. Use the Green disk for backups.
I'm one step closer to building my empire.
I read your 'generic guideline for disk setup' and am pretty sure I can get away with three or four disks total without committing to a RAID. I'm going to get at least the wd caviar blacks tomorrow to tide me over for the next six months while I read the rest of these forum discussions
You may want to read Planning and Building a new system and more specifically the section about Disk I/O. This is a huge overkill for your needs now, but it shows that even with a large number of disks you can still keep things simple with only three different drive letters.
- C: OS & programs: 4 x SSD in Raid10. One could always start with a single SSD.
- D: Pagefile, media cache, renders: 6 x HDD in Raid0 using 2 internal ports plus the 4 external ports.
- E: Media, exports and all other stuff: 22 x HDD in Raid30, including 2 hot-spares. 2 x (10 R3 + 1 HS).
