markerline Apr 4, 2012 3:05 PM (in response to zech3)It's appending the number *because* of the artboards. I'm not sure about the default state of selecting export using artboards though.

that's nice to know [thx]. Is there a way to disable that?

markerline Apr 4, 2012 3:57 PM (in response to zech3)Well which is it that you really want? To have it disabled or to have it enabled by default so you don't have to check it each time? When you do check it in the export settings then you will get numbers appended to the end of your filenames if you have more than one artboard.

4. Re: Illustr. CS5 Appending -01 onto filenam when export .jpg
zech3 Apr 4, 2012 5:26 PM (in response to markerline)well,... I'd like to have Use Artboards checked by default, but that appending a number thing is pissing me off. Can I have Use Artboards checked by default and have it NOT append numbers? I've had to rename like 50 files since last comment.
Another thing, everytime I go to export I have to re-navigate away from the source file location and find the directory I [want] to put it in. It's like 8 clicks away everytime I export. Seems like they would have made it smarter than that. Like save it to the folder you last exported to...

6. Re: Illustr. CS5 Appending -01 onto filenam when export .jpg
markerline Apr 4, 2012 5:43 PM (in response to zech3)If you're on Windows there's "Recent Places" shortcut in the save dialog. Also, if you don't append individualized numbers to your artboards you will end up with an AI file that has 50 distinct artboards but only one JPG which will represent the last artboard that was saved. Don't you want to create artboards and JPG's to represent those artboards as unique files? There might be a script that someone has written or you might be able to record an Action to save the name of the individual artboard exclusively. I think if you split up your artboards into distinct layers you might be able to save the layers as individual files as I have heard someone mention before in these forums (unless that's a Photoshop feature and not an Illustrator feature).

7. Re: Illustr. CS5 Appending -01 onto filenam when export .jpg
zech3 Apr 4, 2012 5:58 PM (in response to markerline)You know what,... you're absolutely right. It wouldn't make sense when there are several artboards. Right now I'm just hammering on this project and the sketch phase is just taking forever, using [one] artboard for each file. Just needed to quickly pump out a bunch of comps. [probably a better way to do it].
It makes sense that exporting artboards should be numbered for you BUT if exporting only one, you'd think the system would be smart enough NOT to throw a number on the end. Whatevs.
I should have thought of this before I posted, but I just remembered I could have been using the save-for-web dialogue. THAT remembers exactly where you last exported to. Yea, Mac has recent places too, shoulda thought of that as well...
Theyve obviously thought this thru more than me... Thanks a million for your help!!
