Blue_Devil1 Apr 5, 2012 4:33 PM (in response to Trevor.Dennis)Thanks for the reply. I had already seen that tutorial and it isn't exactly what I wanted. I didn't have the terms down. I appologize, but what I wanted was a way to make some texture which I could put above the text layer and then combine with the text so it looked like there were random lines through the text.. I hope that makes sense. Thanks.

3. Re: How can I make "grunge text" ?
Trevor.Dennis Apr 5, 2012 6:55 PM (in response to Blue_Devil1)- Lay down your text.
- Place your texture layer above the text layer, and use Free Transform to shape it to suite.
- Ctrl/Cmd click your text layer to load it as a selection.
- Add a Layer mask to the Texture layer.
You could toggle through the texture layer's blend modes for best effect. If you just wanted lines from the texture, then using Lighten blend mode would overlay the lines on dark text, and darken blend mode would overlay dark lines on a lighter toned text.

c.pfaffenbichler Apr 6, 2012 12:43 AM (in response to Trevor.Dennis)Add a Layer mask to the Texture layer.
Or Cipping Mask the Layer with the texture to the Text Layer (command-alt-G).
Blue_Devil1, if you could prvovide (a link to) an example of what you are trying to emulate that might be helpful.

8. Re: How can I make "grunge text" ?
Blue_Devil1 Apr 6, 2012 6:47 AM (in response to c.pfaffenbichler)I really appreciate your help. This TV channel, AMC has several shows with the text I want to try to emulate.
The Killing http://www.amctv.com/shows/the-killing
Hell on Wheels http://blogs.amctv.com/photo-galleries/hell-on-wheels-season-1-scrapbook/introduction.php
and FX's Justified http://vod.fxnetworks.com/watch/justified.
I downloaded a bunch of textures that were left out of CS5 (from Aobde) to use in texturizer, but they didn't seem to be as good as the previous link above (circle with TEST in it).
I'm not sure how to do that with a brush unless I just make a bunch of lines on a layer one at a time. Is that how I do it?
Thanks.

Trevor.Dennis Apr 6, 2012 12:03 PM (in response to c.pfaffenbichler)Don't forget Filter > Render Fibers if you want lines. Clouds and Fibers are the two starting blocks for a huge number of illustrative effects.

12. Re: How can I make "grunge text" ?
Blue_Devil1 Apr 6, 2012 3:16 PM (in response to Trevor.Dennis)Thanks. You guys are the best. I'd tried the fibers before, but there were too many lines (ie I couldn't figure out how to separate them).
I used a slight variation of C. Pfaffenbilcher's brush (ie I made the spacing 1000) and angled it at 45 and then made a couple of strokes and then changed to 135 and made a couple more strokes, creating sort of a cross hatched pattern.
Then I used Dennis' technique of creating a selection of the text and adding it to a layer mask on the pattern layer.
The only problem I had is the lines are faint, so the only way I could make them blacker (light orange text) was to duplicate the pattern layer with mask several times. Is there a better way to do this?
I was brushing using black. Also, is there someway to make the outside of the text irregular similar to the text in the circle shown by C. P. ?
Thanks again.

Bill Hunt Apr 6, 2012 4:50 PM (in response to Blue_Devil1)John,
Nice to see you here!
When "creating" Text with "character," there are many, many methods, and sometimes the background, or the use, will dictate one method vs another.
I usually go into the process with the idea in my mind, and use many of the variations outlined above. As I am less often trying to replicate an example, but instead, create something from the recesses of my brain. As you found out, the results can differ, depending on aspects, such as pixel x pixel Image Size/resolution. It's also great to have as many methods, as possible, to work with, as sometimes, a combo of techniques can yield vastly different results. Same for a bunch of Textures.
I often start with an older plug-in for Text, from the PhotoFX folk, and then go from there.
Also, creating Text as a Selection (like back in the olden days of PS), and then working from there, can be very, very useful.
Take care, and glad that the folk here got you what you wanted - they ARE good!
See 'ya,
Hunt

Blue_Devil1 Apr 6, 2012 8:23 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill,
The problem is I spend too much time making DVD menu's and I keep forgetting how to do much in Photoshop even if I did something before. Every once in a while I see something, I think is neat and I want to use if on the menu. Actually, I think the actual term I was thinking of was "Distressed Text", not grundge, but aside from a few details, I think I may have it now.
Thanks for your tips. That reminds me, I think I saw an article you did on Fonts somewhere. It would be great if you could tell me where that is.

Trevor.Dennis Apr 6, 2012 8:30 PM (in response to Blue_Devil1)If the lines are not strong enough, try copying the texture layer, and seeting the copy's blend mode to Multiply.

Bill Hunt Apr 7, 2012 8:49 AM (in response to Blue_Devil1)John,
I completely understand. Many years ago (about PS 4.0 days), I did a series of tutorials for a graphics client, and many of those were doing "stuff" to Type. Some years later, I needed to apply some of those techniques, and could not even get started. Found the old WordPerfect tutorials, and had a good read of my own words, and it all came back to me.
Is this the article that you are referring to? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/479026?tstart=0
Good luck, and see you in the Encore Forum.

I use a (scaled) Pattern Layer set to Blend Mode Hard Mix and Gaussian Blur the underling layer.
The scale of the pattern and the strength of the blur determine the result.
But this results in black and white pixels, so one could do it at 200% size (for example in a Smart Object) and downscale it.

21. Re: How can I make "grunge text" ?
Blue_Devil1 Apr 8, 2012 6:14 PM (in response to Tom Murray 1)Thanks again guys.
1. I was able to make the lines with the above brush black by applying Threshold to the layer with the lines. .
2. I got the Hard Mix , gausian blur technique to work. Impressive how much a little gausian blur adds.
3. I found a pattern and put Threshold on it and saved it as a pattern and then used pattern overlay to applly it to the text which worked out pretty well (I dialed down the fill to 0 in the blending options).
4. Unfortunately, you lost me with your displacement instructions ie I'm not sure what 2 channels mean.
5. I'll give the grunge brushes a try.
6. I'm going to try making the pattern with the line brushes and then use the pattern overlay and see what happens.
Thanks again.

c.pfaffenbichler Apr 9, 2012 1:02 AM (in response to Blue_Devil1)you lost me with your displacement instructions ie I'm not sure what 2 channels mean.
If the psd-file that is used as a Displacement Map is RGB, CMYK or multichannel the first channel is used for horizontal and the second for vertical offset.
