CS4 32 bit will not open under Win 7 64 bit.

    JOHNCHAP2AD

Upgraded from Win 32 bit XP to Win 7 64 bit. While in the process of rebuilding my system downloaded and installed Beta versions of CS6 and Bridge for CS6, before trying to install my current CS4 version. I do not know whether this is causing any of the following problems that I am experiencing.

A short time later I installed CS4, ending up with both the 32 and 64 bit versions of CS4. Interestingly, this install did not install a CS4 version of Bridge in either 32 bit or 64 bit, possibly because the Beta CS6 version of Bridge was installed?

However, from a previous system backup I was able to retrieve a copy of the CS4 version (presumably 32 bit version) of Bridge, which I simply copied to the new system and found that it works fine. Interestingly now the CS6 version of Bridge loads one of the two CS4 versions and not the Beta CS6, but I cannot tell which one of the CS4 versions. Question: how does one determine whether the loaded version is the 32 or 64 bit version? If I click on System Info it does say X64 which I assume means the 64 bit version is loaded. Is this the way to tell?

The CS4 version of Bridge now apparently defaults to the 64 bit version of CS4 on opens.

I have now read that most if not all my previous plugins will not run under CS4 64 bit, so I really need to be able to run CS4 32 bit. Unfortunately, when I try to open CS4-32, it fails with the following msgs: "Adobe Photoshop CS4 Has Stopped Working." Then,

      "Problem signature:

The CS4-64 version continues to run as it should.

Assuming that CS6 will come with a 32 bit version when it hits the market I will be upgrading, but for now I really need a working 32 bit version of CS4.

      Please help.

Help - System Info will tell you whether you're running the 64 bit or 32 bit version (look at the end of the first line).  EDIT:  Note that originally said Help - About and have corrected this.

Yes, Photoshop CS6 provides both a 32 and 64 bit version.  In fact, it should have installed both on your system.

Normally the two versions don't get into eachothers' hair, EXCEPT for file associations, which may explain the mixup you're having where Bridge runs the last version installed.  I doubt it has to do with your crash though.

Have you copied any plug-ins or set an Extra plug-ins folder so that there could be a mixup between the two versions?

Have you checked to see if your display driver has been updated?  Go to the web site of the maker of your video card and download the version that matches your hardware and OS.  Display driver updates solve many problems.

You're missing a couple of updates (11.0.2).  And do you have any third party plugins?   Did you install the TWAIN plugin (which might crash because of a bad driver)?

CS6 only installed the 64bit Beta version.  I have deleted the extra plugins folder from both the CS6-64 and the CS4-64 versions.  Since I can't get the CS4-32 to run I can do nothing about an extra plugins for it. Display driver is the latest.

Did run the updates and now version 11.0.2 .  However I was not able to DL and install "Extension Mgr CS4 2.1" . I do have third party plugins but were not installed.

This msg is to the two people kind enough to offer some suggestions.  As indicated above, I did undertake their suggestions but nothing seemed to change.  CS4-32 continued to hang.  But then I entered the Twilight Zone/Never-Never-Land of Microsoft computing.  I kept trying double clicking on the Desktop Icon for CS4-32 bit and kept getting the msg that the program had been stopped.  Being a cynic and one who has worked with computers nearly 50 years (from 1864), I decided to try come other approaches.  I first went into the Program Files (x86) directory and into the Adobe sub directory.  Went into the sub CS4 and double clicked the CS4 Application file and up popped CS4-32 bit, just like it should have from the beginning.  Sent that application to the desktop.  Now, it does not matter which CS4-32 icon (the one I sent to the desktop or the one put there by the original instal) I click on, CS4-32 opens right up.

I cannot explain how or why, just that it did.  And I want to thank the two who offered the suggestions.
