1. Re: configuration advice; I'm in need of adding disk space on an iMac
Harm Millaard Apr 22, 2012 7:19 AM (in response to nefl777)That is about the best you can get with an iMAC. It is a compromise in performance, but the iMAC has no alternatives.

RjL190365 Apr 22, 2012 9:11 AM (in response to nefl777)Actually, you want to rethink that hub:
The Belkin hub is Firewire 400 only. Unfortunately, your iMac has absolutely no Firewire 400 connectors at all whatsoever. Worse, most external hard drives are significantly slower on Firewire 400 than on USB 2.0 because most external hard drive enclosures that support Firewire 400 have really lousy SATA-to-FW400 converters. In one test, that external hard drive can sustain 25 to 30 MB/s on USB 2.0 but only 10 to 12 MB/s on FW400!

You are right. I think I was excited to have a solution with this hub but it simply didn't register in my mind that it was 400.
thanks so much for pointing that out. I also found this one:
and it appears to get good reviews and has that magic 800 number. thanks RJL !
