You said some Indesign file...
Where are these saved?
Which OS you are on?
Have you created these file yourself in the same version of Indesign or someone else has created thses files?

Holly.D.J Apr 16, 2012 5:01 AM (in response to Manish-Sharma)Yes, some files open fine but some come up with that message. They are saved to my desktop. The OS is Windows Vista 64. I created them with the same version of InDesign on the same computer.

Holly.D.J Apr 18, 2012 12:11 PM (in response to Manish-Sharma)This is the file but it also happens to some others. I'm worried about opening other files in case the message comes up when I open them.

Peter Spier Apr 17, 2012 6:07 AM (in response to Holly.D.J)Holly,
File attachments on the forum are disabled. You'll need to upload your files to a fileshare service or dropbaox or whatever, then put a link here or send the link privately to Manish.

You can go on Dropbox.com and then put the file there and share the Public link here so that everyone can share there solutions and ideas.

Manish-SharmaApr 18, 2012 5:02 AM (in response to Holly.D.J)
I was able to open the file in my Indesign CS5.5 without any problem.
Now , The thinks that I was missing were "Links", hence can you change the location of the links present in the file and then check.
Also Where are these links saved , on local computer or network?

11. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Holly.D.J Apr 18, 2012 7:51 AM (in response to Manish-Sharma)That's good. The links are saved on a network at work. I tried opening it at work though and it still didn't work. I don't know whether to open other InDesign files which I've done at home (which have all the links on my computer) incase it corrupts them or something?

The links are saved on a network at work. I tried opening it at work though and it still didn't work.
Copy the link on the desktop and then check.

13. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Holly.D.J Apr 18, 2012 11:36 AM (in response to Manish-Sharma)So do you mean I should copy the links from the network to my desktop, then see if the document opens? I'm not in work til Tuesday but I'll try then.

14. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Manish-SharmaApr 18, 2012 11:56 AM (in response to Holly.D.J)
Yes, As I said the file opened at my end , the difference is links....
hence move the link on the desktop , this will lead to missing link in the Indesign file and let see after that does your file open.

15. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Holly.D.J Apr 18, 2012 12:43 PM (in response to Manish-Sharma)Ok I'll try that when I go to work and let you know if it works.

Holly.D.J Apr 23, 2012 3:23 AM (in response to Manish-Sharma)I tried moving the links to my desktop and it still didn't open. I can't open any files now or open InDesign to create new files. I don't know why it's got worse. I'm not sure what to do?

Manish-SharmaApr 23, 2012 3:32 AM (in response to Holly.D.J)
May be when opening the file or Opening the Indesign , it tries to recover the file and crashes hence , delete this folder:-
C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\
C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\

19. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'

Yes, But I say let her reset the preference completely because the file do open at our end but not at her
Troubleshooting 101 has not been tried , which is pretty basic.

21. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Holly.D.J Apr 23, 2012 10:47 AM (in response to Manish-Sharma)I searched my computer for
C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\
C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\
but I can't find them/ don't have them.
I think I've found the InDesign recovery folder but where do I move it to?

22. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Joel Cherney Apr 23, 2012 11:36 AM (in response to Holly.D.J)Holly, did you search for the whole path, or did you look inside the Users folder for your account? I'd expect it'd look something like this:
C:\Users\Holly\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe InDesign Version 5.5\English
Because we don't know how your computer is set up, you'd need to use the paths that Manish posted to figure out where your versions of these files are located.
I think I've found the InDesign recovery folder but where do I move it to?
I think that if you just move it away from that location to another place where you can find it easily if you ever need to find it and put it back where it came from (for example, your desktop) then that would probably be enough.

23. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Holly.D.J Apr 23, 2012 12:05 PM (in response to Joel Cherney)Would it be:
C:\Users\Holly\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version 7.5\en_GB ?
Shall i delete the 'en_GB' folder?
I've moved the InDesign recovery folder to my desktop.
-
24. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Peter Spier Apr 23, 2012 12:13 PM (in response to Holly.D.J)That's one. You can move the whole folder if you like, but the only file that probably matters in it is InDesign Defaults.
The other path will be C:\Users\Holly\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version 7.5\en_GB\caches and you'll want to delete, move or rename InDesign SavedData.

Holly.D.J Apr 23, 2012 12:26 PM (in response to Peter Spier)I've moved those files to my desktop but it still won't open documents.

26. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Peter Spier Apr 23, 2012 1:49 PM (in response to Holly.D.J)Were you trying to open the same documents? You should be checking with different files, and you should empty the recovery folder again first.
Once that you've emptied the recovery folder, start ID from the start menu or a shortcut -- don't double-click a file to open, and see if ID will launch successfully. If it does, create a new file, save and close it (just add a randome text frame and fill with placeholder text for the test). Can you reopen that from the File > Open... dialog? How about after closing and restarting ID?

27. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Holly.D.J Apr 23, 2012 2:07 PM (in response to Peter Spier)Yeah I was trying to open the same documents.
I emptied the recovery folder again and created a new document with text and I was able to close it and open it fine. So I can make new documents now. Is there any way of being able to open the documents that won't open?

28. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Peter Spier Apr 23, 2012 2:15 PM (in response to Holly.D.J)Let's try one more thing. Create a brand new user account and log in with that. Start ID and see if one of the problem files will open.
-
29. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Peter Spier Apr 23, 2012 2:36 PM (in response to Holly.D.J)Did you actually MOVE the links to your desktop, so they were no longer in the old location, or COPY the links to the desktop so they were in both places? If you copied them, ID can still find the originals and we won't get the file to open if one of them is corrupt. It is essential that they no longer be where ID is going to look for them automatically, which means not in the original location, and not in the same folder, or a subfolder of that folder, where the .indd file located.

30. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Holly.D.J Apr 24, 2012 2:31 PM (in response to Peter Spier)I created a new user account and tried to open the file but it came up with the 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working' message and closed.
I copied the links to my desktop so they are both on the network at work and on my desktop. Now that I am not connected to the network with the original links shouldn't it work? The only links InDesign could find now would be the ones on my desktop.
-
31. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Peter Spier Apr 24, 2012 2:59 PM (in response to Holly.D.J)That should be fine, as long as the ID file isn't also on the desktop. When the original links are missing, ID automatically searches the current folder and any subfolders to see if it can find them (that's how Package works when you send your original files to someone else).

32. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Holly.D.J Apr 24, 2012 3:20 PM (in response to Peter Spier)The ID file and the copied links are in a folder on the desktop. It still won't open. Should I move the ID file to somewhere else?
-
33. Re: 'InDesign CS5.5 has stopped working'
Peter Spier Apr 24, 2012 3:35 PM (in response to Holly.D.J)Yes. The file and the links MUST NOT be in the same folder.
Once you get it to open, you can relink one-by-one until you find a problem.

Holly.D.J Apr 25, 2012 2:54 AM (in response to Peter Spier)I moved the links to my desktop and the file is in a folder on the desktop. It still won't open. I made sure I emptied the recovery folder again.

Manish-SharmaApr 25, 2012 5:12 AM (in response to Holly.D.J)
Apologies for replying late....
Can you check one more thing i.e, to disconnect from the network or server where these file were saved and then open the file from the folder on the desktop and check.
Disconnecting from the network will make your machine standalone and better enviorment to check.
Just check and let us know , once you have done your testing you can re-connect to the network.
