CS6 release date

Anyone know the CS6 release date?  I have to upgrade Dreamweaver and I'm hoping Adobe augments its "timeline" animation utility.

CS5 shipped in April 2010.

Going by Adobe's usual 12-18 month upgrade cycle, I would not expect to see CS6 until at least Sep-Oct 2011.

By Timelines, are you referring to the Timeline feature in DW which was dropped in CS4. That won't return.

That's correct. The video was probably created a few years ago in Dreamweaver 8 or CS3.

Dreamweaver CS4 and CS5 do not have Timelines and they won't be returning in any future version. I think that's a good thing.

As interesting as Timelines were in DW, they were created via some horrendously outdated and bulky Javascript. Rather than waste resources updating a little used feature, Adobe chose to remove it altogether and let users create animations in Flash which is far more suited to that task.

John, thanks for your attention to my questions.

Imagine the shape of a polygon formed by a succession of letters.  I want the letters to rotate around that shape.  Supposedly HTML5's canvas feature facilitates such animation, although that language is not yet well documented.  Javascript is often disabled in browsers and Flash is not supported by Apple Computer products.

You mean the iPad and iPhone.  Flash is supported in Safari and OSX generally.

[Gill] I saw an interview of the Adobe CFO on one of the business channels and that question was asked and he said mid next year.  The video was cut in late 2010.

Always take predictions of software release dates from any source with a very large grain of salt. Until you see an official announcement that something will be released on a specific date (usually about one month in advance), it remains vapourware.

Adobe's past release cycle has fluctated between 18 and 24 months, but that's not a solid indication of what might happen in future. My advice regarding upgrades has always been to test the new version as soon as it's released. If it does what you want, buy it as soon as possible in order to get the maximum benefit from the new features. If the new features aren't of interest, wait until the next version, which will be along sooner or later. But it doesn't take a genius to work out that the longer you leave it after a new version has been released, the less value you'll get out of your purchase if the following version has the killer features that you absolutely must have.

I've also replied to your question about what I want to achieve.  The problem with Flash of course is that it's not supported in Apple products.

I am fortunate that I can purchase CS5 at a discounted price for being a student, but I am a broke (and jobless) student. I got burnt on the CS4 update a week after buying CS3. I really don't want to make that mistake again, and I have considered waiting until CS6 is officially released.

It's March 2011 now, and although six or seven months isn't too far away, I may not be able to afford school by then; the state is threatening to increase tuition by 75% to make up for budget shortfalls, which would mean that I would have to pay an arm and leg to get the program just so I can learn how to use it.

Do I buy the egg, even though it is starting to become rotten, or do I hold out for the chicken, not knowing when the new batch of eggs will be laid, or if I will even be able to afford the eggs by then? It seems to me that given the situation, a bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush.

Any thoughts, or other options you guys might know about?

From where I sit, DW CS5 isn't all that different from CS4 except for the PHP code and 'integrated CMS support'. If the bulk of your work is in PHP, WordPress, Joomla! or Drupal then yes, upgrading now might be a good decision for you.

Otherwise, wait until you can afford another purchase (with student discount or otherwise).

I actually upgraded my Design Suite CS4 Premium to CS5 for the Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator enhancements rather than Dreamweaver CS5 (which I still view as a modest upgrade).

I agree completely that when it comes to the suite it has to be multiple programs.  And on this topic Adobe recently updated their Acrobat X FAQ page (the one program not part of CS5).  I'm not sure when, but it does give some insight.  Check out the bold highlighted terms:

So it looks like CS5.X is not going to happen and CS6 is what we are waiting for.  I just hope they fix the damn OSX bug with the color palette always showing black in Snow Leopard which has existed since CS5 was released, and yes I submitted bug reports and even had Randy confirm the bugs shortly after the release of CS5.

I received an offer from Adobe to upgrade Photoshop Elements to Elements C5S at a reduced rate.  The offer expires April 4, so I suspect that CS6 would be coming out some time after that date.

I stopped buying the full boxed version of the Premium Design suite, and purchased the subscription edition instead.

It's been great, I pay a monthly fee and receive free upgrades whenever Adobe releases a new version.

So I'm looking forward to CS6.

CS5.5 (paid upgrade) is announced and will ship some time in May 2011... CS6 some time in 2012

To upgrade to CS6, you have to be on CS5 or CS5.5 - but you can get 20% off for now to get you to CS5 or CS5.5 and then get the upgrade discount when it is released. But no date for that.

Yes, that's correct - though it may be new to some folks because for several years it was "three versions back"...  But Adobe's upgrade policy has just changed.
