PROBLEMS opening  PDF in IE 9 or X

    Jim_TSI

How can it be that Adobe releases a new version not able to open a PDF from a link?

      ADOBE GET IT FIXED!!!!!!!

It can not be true that you have to change the settings in preferences before it works. How do I explain this to 1000 of  my costumers?

          Good day,

Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 was released after development for Adobe Reader X was complete.  While we made every effort to anticipate the way the final release version of IE9 would behave, our PDF viewer plugin is not yet compatible with IE9.  This is being worked on by our engineering department.  In the interim, when trying to open a PDF file from the browser, save it locally to your computer and open it directly in Adobe Reader.

Moving forward, please continue to install updates to Adobe Reader X as they become available.  When this issue has been resolved, it will be pushed via an update.

          Thank you,

I hope it will be fixed shortely, but for now I prefer to install a previous version...

Adobe acrobat 8 has a problem with IE9 too, in spooling phase.

Hello David and thank you for that reply. This is all very well and good when pdf files can be saved to the desktop but I have a few where the last thing I click on in IE9 to get to the pdf is not a shortcut to the pdf itself but a radio button leading to another page (which then somehow pushes the pdf to me). If I right click on that final webpage 'confirm' radio button before the pdf opens in my browser (but cannot be worked with properly because the buttons don't work), I do not get the option to save the pdf as a file. There seems that in some cases saving the pdf to file just isn't an option...

How can I view such files in the interim until Adobe have this problem nailed - and when do you expect to release the patch for Reader X which addresses this? If you can't be specific is it days.... weeks or.... well you get the idea?

I am running XP  sp2/sp3 with IE8 and it doesn't work in that either. Contacted support ,moronic term, on 4/13 and they had no clue there was even a problem. Maybe someone in India could help??

Hi, I have resolved my problem in an unexpected way:

I think it may help you...

Alas that solution doesn't work for me and I still have problems with Reader X under IE9 and Windows 7 SP1 (x64 now) set to 150% display settings. The toolbars won't work and it's just hopeless trying to do anything unless it can be opened in the standalone version of Reader X. Unfortunately not all websites make this easy as not all give the option of saving the pdf file to disk. I really hope a fix for this will be coming soon and I've applied to assist with the pre-release version coming up...

I am using Win7 (32-bit), IE9 and ARX.  I cannot view PDFs on some websites.  I bank with two different banks, I can get my bank statement on one site but not the other site.  The suggestion of saving the PDF to my computer then opening locally doesn't work either.  It tells me pdf couldn't be downloaded.  This problem started sometime in the past 3 months, but I don't know the timeline of what programs were updated/installed.  About 5 or 6 weeks ago my browser was updated, but I don't know when Adobe Reader was last updated.  Before I found this thread, I uninstalled/reinstalled ARX thinking there was a problem with my version of it.  Has this incompatibility issue been fixed yet?  Is there something else I can try?

If you are getting a message such as this, I suspect that's down to the server at the other end. At least you can right click and attempt to save to disk - many of the pdf files I'm thinking of, don't give that option because there's a button to open them. They do open in ARX within IE9 but because none of the menu or toolbar options work, I can't then save the pdf to open it in stand-alone ARX.

I've chased up my application to assist with pre-release testing but was advised they may or may not choose me to help. I guess they must have a huge workload to make it compatible with IE9 on Win 7 with displays set to other than 100% and still be working on getting a pre-release ready....

I have learned that by downloading Chrome, you can open PDF files. For the time being I'm using it as a work-around, but I do hope that the problem with Internet Explorer is worked out.l

Yeah, just switching a browser is a good idea that works. Google Chrome is far better than IE in my opinion anyway.

This problem has been out there for 5 months now.  I get an update from Adobe everytime I turn around, but IE9 still crashes on downloading PDF's.  When are

you guys going to get this fixed?

Easy for you to say, but if .NET business software requires IE we have no choice in the matter.

Well Adobe released AR version 10.1.1 on 13 Sep and the release notes say:

                                  Added support for:

Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 7 SP1 Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise (32 bit and 64 bit)

                                  • Viewing PDFs in Firefox 4 on Windows (not Mac)

                                  • WebCapture with Firefox 4 and IE 9 on Win and Mac

                                  • Mac OS 10.6.7

                                  • IE 9 is fully supported.

So I duly updated and expected the IE9 and ARX incompatibility problem to be solved.  But alas I still cannot view or download PDF statements from my credit card company. When I click on the PDF link absolutely nothing happens.  So I have no idea what the problem is now!  I am using Win 7, IE9 (32bit) and AR 10.1.1  Does anyone have an idea on what the problem could be?

Try going into the Advanced settings under Internet Options.  Under the <Browsing> section make sure the box "Use 3rd rty Browser Extensions" is checked.

Thanks for the suggestion, in my case the "Enable third-party browser extensions" box is checked.  Any more ideas appreciated.

In IE9 try going to Tools/Compatibility View settings  and add the site where the PDF is located to the Compatability list.  This worked for me.

I suspect you are trying to open the pdf doc (32 bit) with a 64 bit browser.  In windows 7, the OS is likely 64 bit but it will support both 32/64 bit programs.  Try navigating to program files (x86), then to the folder Internet Explorer.  Find the iexplore application and right click!  run this program as administrator if possible.  now navigate to website where pdf is available, you should be able to open the file now.

I think the problem is with Internet Explorer 9, not with Adobe Reader X.  I downloaded the free version of Apple's Safari as my web browser  Then I went to my bank, VISA, and brokerage accounts from Safari and was able to easily view and print my recent statements.  I did this only after spending countless hours downloading, deleting, re-downloading, and trying all the recommended fixes for Adobe problems.  Hope this works for you!

Yes it's definitely IE 9 not Adobe and like you spent hours trying to

sort it. I found out, that it was  problem with IE9 and not my

computer, via Amazon. I was trying to print gift vouchers and couldn't.

They were aware of this problem and recommended using Firefox as my

browser. This works fine with Adobe so every time I need to download an

Adobe file I switch my web browser.

I had the same problem with IE 9. I have both Acrobat 7.0 Professional  and Adobe Reader X (10.1.2) installed on my machine (Windows 7, 64-bit).

I opened the reader and in Edit -> Preferences -> General section , I clicked on the  button "Set Default PDF Handler" and selected "Adobe Reader X (10.1.2)"  and  clicked "OK". It installed something and prompted me to restart the machine. After restart it worked fine. I can now open PDF documents in IE without any problem.

Initially I was disappointed because the 'default pdf handler' was already set to Adobe Reader X (10.1.2). I re-selected 'Adobe Reader X (10.1.2)' and after the automatic install and restart the problem is solved. Thanks again.

I only learned of this compatibility issue after emailing my energy supplier to say I could not open PDF versions of my bills from their website! Why this issue has been kept a 'secret', by Adobe & Microsoft, for so long is anybody's guess?

Alas this seems to be an indication of the lack of interest Adobe has towards users of Microsoft software. They eventually addressed the problem I reported earlier with 125% desktop settings under IE9 but still the maximum 150% setting causes problems (toolbar buttons don't work at all and Reader X is unusable within IE9). Why they didn't simply address both at the same time, I'll never know. With the official release of IE 10 (and Windows 8) just around the corner (and available already in pre-release form), I certainly hope Adobe are carefully testing for such issues with future OS's. It's a very dissapointing perfomance by Adobe so far as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for that suggestion but my system is ALL 32 bit and 2 days ago I performed a totally fresh installation from the ground up and using the FTP version of the full 10.1.3. Alas, I'm still getting the toolbar being totally unresponsive in ARX while my system is set to 150% (as desribed above) although (in my case) the pdf you linked to will open - I just can't do anything with it that I'd need the toolbars for!

Unfortunately neither of these settings result in decent sized icons and graphics on my screen so 150% is a must. I have reported it to your UK HQ (they're just a couple of miles from where I live so I took in a letter with some printed screenshots). If you need further info though, don't hesitate to ask and I'll be glad to tell you more.... anything to help get this problem finally fixed!

This is a very serious issue for some of us (as we transact business and send/receive many documents as pdf).  What are your customers supposed to do until this issue is resolved?

I use MBNA and whilst you can load a PDF statement and print it you can't save it. I spoke to them re this and it's the way they've set it up and not the fault of Adobe. Hence I reverted back to paper statements as the idea of going paperless was to be paperless.

                                                                                  Hope this helps
