I've been having the same problem, too. Thanks for the help. Gonna try it.

Sorry, no go. "Check for updates" doesn't have "Preferences" (in Reader 8.0.0), and "Preferences" doesn't have "Check for updates".
here's what happened on mine
I have reader 8.0.0
I went to
"help" (on the menu bar)
at the bottom of the help menu drop down is "Check for updates"
when I click on "Check for updates" it starts a download
hit cancel and another dialog pops up asking
what to do, the last selection on the dialog is
"cancel and cancel all future updates" or something like that

Strange... on my computer this didn't work. I hit "Check for updates" and "Cancel" and then nothing, it just stopped downloading and gave no popup.
It turns out that there is a preferences dialog, but it can be accessed only *after* you've checked for and downloaded the update. Talk about logic.
To turn off Automatic Update or you chose when to intall them, do these steps:
Click on Edit, then click on Preference (bottom of drop down menu), and screen will show one of three choice for you to check off. That should fix your issue.
