There was a bug in one of the versions of ACR and the Adobe DNG Converter that affected the Photo Downloader and Bridge. Can't remember off-hand which version and the forums were split by platform since then.
At any rate, you should make certain that Photoshop is updated to version 10.0.1, Bridge to 188.8.131.52, and Adobe Camera Raw to 4.6.
Also make sure the Camera Raw.plugin file is in its correct location and that you have only one instance of the file installed.
Note that the path to the correct folder begins with the name of your Hard Disk. You do not want your home folder or your user library involved at all here.

Thanks for your time and suggestion - still not working. More info that may or may not help. In addition to the above problems, when I try to open up thumbnails that do have an image on them, I get a message that says Photoshop doesn't recognize file type - so am now totally unable to do any work on Photoshop! I'm sure that in trying to correct things have made things even worse- as may be noticed by the two snapshots I've attached. The first is one from a library from my user section. The second library image is from my hard drive. Hopefully you and others aren't laughing or crying too much over what you see - redundantcy, etc! All of my energies have focused on taking photos, obviously none to proper setup/use of organizing things on my Mac. But after the laughing has stopped, any help will be tremendously appreciated - am most anxious to getting back to working with and saving images
I appreciate your suggestions, still- nothing seems to be working. Will try and delete Photoshop CS3 again and start all over. One other question. Would it be helpful if I went back to my backup (Time Machine) and try moving Photoshop back from the backup disc and replacing the one that seems to be hanging up in all these different areas? Don't know if you saw what I put out for discussion yesterday with two images of two different libraries and how they are configured? Thanks again for any thoughts.
Thanks for the suggestion. Have just reinstalled Photoshop CS3 and
have a limited bit of success and also followed your suggestion.
Still having a problem. I used to be able to put one of the memory
chips in our card reader and thumbnails would appear on Bridge Photo
downloader. Now, only CR2 icons or NEF icons appear - unless I have
camera directly plugged into computer - which is much slower and also
wears down battery. Any suggestions?
Many thanks for your time.
