help! editing drop down menu bar

    shira-ra-ra Community Member

i am maintaining a website created by another designer. I need to edit the dropdown menu bar, which i assumed was created using spry but the little tab to edit it isnt there- when i hover my mouse over i can see the blue highlight, and i can select the buttons, but i cant edit any of the content- was it created some other way??? i dont know what to do!*

Many of us do not use Spry for dropdown menus. It's possible to create great menus with just simple HTML and CSS. If the menu was created that way, then it should be pretty easy to figure it out by looking at code view.

            ok thats probobly it then-

i've not really done much html (im a bit underqualified for this job but need the money and am very willing to learn!!)

im going to google this, but do u have any particularily helpful links? and the buttons for the dropdown are all linked to jpegs so ill need to create the new buttons, and be able to link them somehow...using html i guess? the css is already there...

Actually the SpryMenuBar is used by many. It is a very easy way to place a menu in your document and once you know how it works, there is no problem.

One of the reasons that you do not get the blue bar is because it is hidden by another part of the document, such as the width of a table, or it could be that you do not have the correct structure for the menubar. The latter will cause DW to not recognise it as a SpryMenuBar.

Try reinstalling the menubar into your document.

Shira, why don't you post the code for the menu here. Someone may recognize it.

Gramps, no slight to those who use Spry was intended by my remarks, but some people simply code everything themselves, or for some other reason choose not to use Spry.

Pretty much all my menus are generated on-the-fly from recordset values, so Spry couldn't be used for that.

I absolutely stand corrected. You are right, the Spry menu can be generated from a recordset. In the video you linked to, he created just one menu level, but I can see that it would be possible to create the whole menu, with multiple levels. So thanks for pointing this out.

I was aslready using pure CSS menus (no javascript) long before DW added the Spry menus, so I was never interested in looking at that feature. Having now looked at it, I see that it's a fine feature and would serve a lot of users very well. I now know that it can even handle a dynamically generated list.

There are three reasons why I would still never use Spry, but not everyone will share these reasons.

                        1. My menus don't require 700 lines of Javascript.

                        2. If there is a problem or if I need to tweak the code, I don't have to wade into the mass of code written by Adobe, but instead just need to modify the 100 lines of PHP that I have written myself.

                        3. I already have a solution that is easy for me to implement in a new project with just a single function call.

Despite my reasons not to use Spry, I can certainly see why it would serve a lot of users very well.

Ok here is the code for the entire menu bar and the dropdowns...im not familiar with code, i just need to identify what to add/remove to change a dropdown button- and i think i have to link a separate image for the button....i think the images were created somewhere else.

Also id really like to learn some code- is this like a teach yourself thing? im very willing...if anyone knows some good sites, or books, or can give me some advice as to how to proceed...would be much appreciated.

Thanks to everybody for taking the time to help me...

I think that your reasoning for not using Spry is sound.

I also feel that there are many newbies in this forum that could see the Spry framework as an easy way to get aquainted with JS and that some of the Spry widgets are an easy way to include visually appealing features to their site.

It boils down to your preferences, some fall in love with the mother, others with the daughter. I gues I love them both.

I realize you didn't build this but your menu system is horrible.  Difficult to maintain, image based.  YIKES!  You should ask for a refund.

If you have a budget to work with, look at project seven's menus.  They work well on all devices and they will save you many hours of re-coding and re-crafting new graphics for your menu items.

If you don't have a budget, replace what you have now with Spry Menu 2.0 from the Adobe Exchange.  It might not look the same as your current menu but in the longrun it will be infinitely better than what you  have now.
