1. Re: Whats the best/fastest format to convert avchd to, for edit purposes?
JSS1138 May 3, 2012 11:33 AM (in response to Steve from NY)The best is to edit it as is. With that machine, you should be fine.

2. Re: Whats the best/fastest format to convert avchd to, for edit purposes?
Steve from NY May 3, 2012 11:36 AM (in response to JSS1138)2 reasons why not.
1) I like to combine the clips into 1 long clip to edit
2) PP stutters when shuttling even 2x speed (video plays off a 2 drive raid 0) I like to shuttle 6-10x speed at times
Whats best format to convert 1920/1080 avchd to, for editing purposes?

3. Re: Whats the best/fastest format to convert avchd to, for edit purposes?
JSS1138 May 3, 2012 11:44 AM (in response to Steve from NY)AVCHD has the same data rate as DV, so shuttling that fast will not be a disk problem, even from a single drive, let alone a RAID 0. If it stutters, it's a CPU thing.
Conversion to any other format is going to expand the data rate significantly, requiring your RAID to work harder. Though the CPU will likely work less, so that could fix the stuttering.
You can always add all the clips to a sequence, and then add that sequence to the Source Monitor for editing as if it were one long clip.
Having said all that, if you still feel the need to convert then I recommend the free and lossless UT codec. You can export out the combined clips right from PP, and the new media will not suffer any quality loss due to conversion.

Steve from NY May 3, 2012 11:49 AM (in response to JSS1138)Hi Jim,
Interesting info. I built 3 nearly exact systems with the 6 core i7-970 & 2 with the 980. I even overclocked one. avchd stutters in all 3 systems when played at 2x speed or faster. Do you have any idea why? My cpu is amoung the best. I'm running PP cs5.5.2

5. Re: Whats the best/fastest format to convert avchd to, for edit purposes?
JSS1138 May 3, 2012 12:05 PM (in response to Steve from NY)The 920's are only 4 core, and these days are getting further away from "the best". But I have a 920 myself (not overclocked), and I have no issues scrubbing that media from a single drive in CS5.
Not sure what your issue might be.

JSS1138 May 3, 2012 4:39 PM (in response to Steve from NY)Microsoft AVI, then change the Video Codec. Use the YUV420 mode for smallest file size.

Steve from NY May 3, 2012 4:46 PM (in response to JSS1138)Thanks Jim.
Is there a problem with going from avchd to UT codec to edit it then out to Blu-ray or DVD ntsc?
