2. Re: Data Merge causing rip to choke
Jeffrey_Smith May 3, 2012 1:26 PM (in response to GeofferyH)When you created the merge, did you create a new Indesign document or did you export to PDF? If you exported to PDF, this method utilizes Forms xObjects, which writes data for a static element just once, as opposed to writing data for the object every page. And this ultimately would creating a much lighter file. To fully reap the benefits of this workflow, your Fiery RIP would have to be compliant for PDF XObjects, and you would have to submit the PDF, as opposed to printing postscript to the device.

Makes sense — but we'd have to incur a click charge for the second pass.

I should've clarified that I'm printing the cover page only and so the data bit is on all of the printed pieces.

It does go much faster that way, however It brings up another issue that you may know the answer to.
About 95% of the time I print from RGB from InDesign, it generally looks better than CMYK. When I create a PDF from ID then drag it to the Fiery it outputs (I'm thinking) as CMYK, the image definitely looks different. Do you know of a way to print RGB from Command Work Station?

7. Re: Data Merge causing rip to choke
P Spier May 3, 2012 3:36 PM (in response to GeofferyH)OK, so if I understand you, you're only printing one side of one sheet, and the rest is already printed. Is that right?
If so, I think the PDF method may be the way to go.

8. Re: Data Merge causing rip to choke
Jeffrey_Smith May 4, 2012 7:08 AM (in response to GeofferyH)From what you describe, you want RGB input and then allow your RIP to convert during process. When you export to PDF to create merged file, change your output settings to "convert to destination", and change your destination to desired flavor of RGB.

You da man! It took a little while to create the PDF but I dragged (the whole file) into the RIP and printed it out in no time. It's going to save a lot of time in the future — not having to print a large document 100 at a time, at 5 minutes of RIP time per 100.
Thanks again.
