Two bugs in one - Lr4

    Old Plop

I have two very annoying bugs that are wasting a lot of my time.

This is LR 4.2, Mac OS 10.7.3

When I try to open a selected batch of photos from LR (usually around 30 photos) and right click on the filmstrip and click on preset that I have made to open in Photoshop CS5 as Tiffs, sRGB, 8-bits 300dpi, no compression (same as I had on LR3), the photos DON'T GET RENDERED in Lr before opening, they will open one by one in Photoshop, which is a pain because during this tme the computer will be unusable. AND most of the time, one photo of the batch won't open at all - if I select 30, only 29 will open.

Is thee anyway to fix these two issues?

Seems to me you are overtasking the processor. Even today's remarkable processors will slow down with you send too many tasks their way. Don't try to do too much with too little. Even with the incredible processors we have available today, they are not instantanious. Sometimes we just have to be reasonable about or expectations. So if you want to open 30 images from LR to PS expect some time delay.

I won't even try to address the 29 vs. 30 opening. Don't have a clue. But be reasonable about these machines -- and, yes, they are only machines -- they cannot perform miracles.

I don't think so. LR3 worked fine on same computer. I think you misread my question too,

I'm not complaining about the time it takes to do the tasks, I'm saying that I want to render TIFFs using Lr not Photoshop, like LR3 did. Asking Lr to open 30 photos is not a big ask, and again LR3 did this without complaint.

Read your original post: You noted that you selected a preset to open in PhotoShop. Please read your original post carefully.

I appreciate your time to reply but unfortunately it has nothing to do with my issues.

                Thanks.

Then you are not expressing your issue in an understandable manner.

Problems are exactly as I described, thanks for your help, unfortunately CPU has nothing to do with the issues.

"click on preset that I have made to open in Photoshop CS5 as Tiffs, sRGB, 8-bits 300dpi, no compression"

That is a quote from your original post noting that you want to open in Photshop CS5. So what part of opening in Photoshop excactly to I do I not understand?

And then in later posts you talk about only wanting to do tasks in LR. Yet, your original post explicitely notes that you want to open in PS.

You really need to reread your original post and reword it if there is something different you are trying to express.

I have the impression that you don't have much experience with the process.

I made a preset to open in Photoshop CS5 as Tiff, sRGB, 8-bit, 300dpi with no compression.

With same preset in LR3, the photos are rendered in Lightroom before opening in Photoshop, leaving the computer free to do other tasks. Now, the photos will not render in Lr in the background, but will render in Photoshop (ACR), one by one, and each one will pop in the forground, making other tasks that I would be working on (email, browsing, invoicing) impossibe. Has absolutely nothing to do with computer power whatsoever.

That and the fact if I select 30, one will not open in Ps at all most of the time.

Rusty, I think you are entirly wrong and if you do not understand the problem you shouldn't post at all, save us some unnecessary clutter.

OP, I had same issue on LR3 when one photo in a batch would go missing when editing in photoshop. the problem was fixed with the next update.

With the other issue, I think from memory you might have a suppressed warning or somehting that asks about whther you want to render in lr or ps, you might have selected ps and ticked 'do not ask again'? I am paraphrasing my memory so I may not be 100 % correct, but I had this issue too and it was so frustratign that I uninstalled lr and reinstalled, it was then fine, photos rendered in lr as I wanted them.

And Fiillu: I noted in my original post that I had no clue about why 29 images appeared vs. 30 sent. That has nothing to do with his posting that he used a preset for Photshop -- which is what I addressed --  and later said that going into Photshop had nothing to do with is problem.

What kind of preset? An Export preset or an Edit In? Are you sure you are doing precisely the same thing in each program?

I think we should just ignore Rusty in the background.

John, yes I'm refering to an Edit In preset.

I think I am doing the same exact thing, I select all in the film strip, right click, find the preset and click. Been doing the same drill for years and it actually worked fine in in Lr4 prior Lr4.1. I do remember at some point a dialog box asking whether I want ot edit in Ps or Lr, but never got it again and as far as I know I selced Lr.

Then go to the Genertal Tab of your Preferences and click on "Reset all warning dialogs", then try again to see if you get the ACR mis-match message, if you do then try Render Using Lightroom to see if that makes a difference.

No Luck, warning reset but it still opens in Ps not Lr. Could it be that my installation is corrupt? Or is it a bug that everyone has?

Do you still have LR3 available? Try replicating the behaviour using exactly the same originals in LR3.

LR3 is uninstalled now John, but originals from same camera worked fine on Lr3. These are from Canon 5dMk2 sRaw1, this is what I always have my camera set to for work.

Not sure whether there is some prefs file that I can safely delete? Or can I disable ACR in Photoshop itself maybe?

Trouble is, I can't replicate what I think you've described and you probably won't be satisfied until you've tested it yourself, and "scientifically" - exactly the same  original pictures, same computer, same version of PS/ACR, exactly the same way to go from LR to PS, LR3 vs LR4.

I wonder if you're "simply" seeing one of the slowdowns in LR4. How quickly does export work? Does Develop seem slow?

Killing prefs seems a miracle cure on Mac, but I don't think it's relevant here.

                                                Thanks John.

I don't think it has anything to with the slowdowns. I have to say I'm not experiencing any signifiacnt speed issues compared to LR3. It'a a MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz i7 with 8Gb RAM on an SSD. Export seems to be as fast as Lr3 and Develop module reasonably fast too.

If you can't replicate it means there is something wrong with my installation I think. I do not beleive that the file types are an issue here because I've been workong with the same files for 2 years, problems just started with Lr4.

I'd be wary of saying it's your installation. Maybe try reviewing Activity Monitor while running this preset?

OK, so I installed the trial of Ps CS6 and the two issues seem to be resolved if I set the Edit In preset to open in PS CS6
