leslie wand May 11, 2012 10:25 PM (in response to Steve from NY)interesting - just left vegas for being a long term guinea pig for 11. haven't received cs6 yet, but reading the comments on this forum doesn't bode well.
what's with software manufacturers nowadays - too interested in chasing the $ than in producing professional software?

Harm Millaard May 11, 2012 11:55 PM (in response to leslie wand)reading the comments on this forum doesn't bode well.
I have been around a bit here, not exactly a noob, but what you observe now, happens with every new release. There are many new users who have bought the latest version or use the trial version, but make one big mistake and the majority of the flurry of posts here at this moment come from these new users.
What is the mistake they make: They don't know video editing, they have no proper education and they don't read the help file. Basically, they are like 17 year olds who have had one driving lesson and expect to be able to participate in the Formula 1 race in Barcelona on Sunday, but are frustrated that they can't even get the F1 car out of the pit lane.
Steve, there is common wisdom in the following:
"Those who know don't tell, those who tell don't know."
So just wait and see...

3. Re: How soon before the cs6.1 release for PPcs6?
leslie wand May 12, 2012 12:45 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)hi harm,
well there was a certain amount of, maybe too subtle, humour to my post ;-)
however, humour aside, i have been a professional tv and video producer for over 40 years. during that time i have worked with nearly every manufacturer of hardware, and with the advent of software nle's, with nearly all of them too. in fact i was, and still am a beta tester for some video products.
your anaylsis is quite right, a great many users do not RTFM, jump right in and think it's just like word processing, but there are those who've had experience with previous releases of a product who are experiencing genuine problems with new releases. i think vegas 11 is a prime example of a 'rushed' release - which 2 point releases still hasn't brought back up to expected standards.
in all honesty i can't comment on adobe premiere since my last experience of it was over a decade ago, (though i own and use cs5 ps and dw regularly), and my interest now is only due to vegas 11's failure to perform reliably, and unlike a great many people i come across, my loyalty only extends to ANY product as long as it works.
so, though i'm more than willing to accept the fact that no amount of limited beta testing is going to pick up all the bugs / problems / whatever, and that the first iteration of any software is not something to start a major project with, i am hoping that those 'problems' that are found / raised are dealt with in a timely manner with a point release.
one thing i have found reassuring is adobe's active presence in this forum. unfortunately scs very rarely contributed to their own forum.
i am awaiting delivery of my cs6 bundle, and though i have cs5.5 my short experience of ppro's gui wasn't very favourable, hence the wait for 6.
we shall see....

4. Re: How soon before the cs6.1 release for PPcs6?
Harm Millaard May 12, 2012 1:37 AM (in response to leslie wand)Leslie,
There used to be a time where we could see if a person was a newbie here with a few posts or a veteran with many posts. That by itself did not mean anything, but could be used as an indicator of the experience and expertise of the person in question. In the new forum setup, about the only thing to go by (and this is very subjective, I admit) is whether one uses a real name or some crazy token to identify himself. This is purely personal and may not reflect the intention of the fora, but if I see identifiers like 'Crazy001', 'Demon1992' or 'xxxqueue' my willingness to help diminishes rapidly. If people show they have not searched for an answer, they have not RTFM, they do not supply details or are on a MAC, the same happens. People with fears to identify themselves who they really are, have something to hide. People afraid to tell details about what equipment they use or where they have problems in an understandable way also have a problem in getting my help, that is if they want it.
OTOH, people like you who are not afraid of telling who they are, who know their business, who investigate before asking a question, well, those are the first ones I want to help if I can.
On the GUI side of PR in comparison to Vegas, I can understand your hesitancy. I have used PR for years, coming from Ulead many years ago and made some efforts to try out Edius and Vegas. I must say that the GUI of Edius was more to my liking than the Vegas interface and workflow. Also Avid was more natural for me with my PR background than Vegas. I expect you will need some time to adjust to the PR GUI, but don't hesitate to ask questions.

5. Re: How soon before the cs6.1 release for PPcs6?
leslie wand May 12, 2012 3:41 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)thanks harm.
many years ago i used to have media 100 and avid suites (was running a production / post house), but i was still happier editing online with betasp, sony bve900, gvg vision mixers, soundcraft desks, etc.,
around the late 90's i used a sony edit station 7 as a hybrid into full nle (my clients were demanding real time ALL the time), and with the coming destop revolution i decided in '99 to give it all up and retire! that didn't work out, and at 64 i'm still turning clients away ;-)
about that time i tried all the nle's around; fast, speed razor, along with all the usual suspects (avid, prem, etc.,) i was most taken with soundforges vegas, and through the years did try sampling the others, but vegas simply worked well for me as an independent producer - i say that because my main gripe with vegas has always been its complete lack of collaborative tools, i mean it can't even spit out a cmx edl!!! anyway, i rarely need to collaborate, so that was ok. i loved the speed and simplicity of doing things in vegas (i teach, well taught, video production as well, from uni through to more recently youth groups and the like) and always recommended vegas as the best tool for the job. as you might have gathered, that's changed with ver 11. suffice to say i cannot trust it with complex projects (yes, i could go backwards and use 10, but hell, i bought 11 and it should work!) - hence my taking a second look at ppro.
i could have gone to edius which has excellent reviews, but since i have cs5.5, upgrading to cs6 was a no brainer. i have never liked avid, even when we had it in the shop, so here i go - yes, not happy having to adapt to a new workflow / gui, etc., but i really don't have time to be a beta tester for scs ;-(

Jay Gladwell May 12, 2012 5:10 AM (in response to leslie wand)Hi, Leslie, glad to see you here!
Harm is very knowledgeable, as are several of the other regular posters. (Their names used to post to the right. Adobe keeps changing the forum layout.)
Making the switch really isn't all that bad. I read something here recently that likened it to muscle memory. So far, I haven't had any real issues, other than reprogramming my muscle memory.
In my brief experiene with PPro (started last March with CS5) is that the upgrades show a genuine effort to improve and evolve, not just take on beels and whistles. And you and I both know the results of that approach!
Anyway, welcome! Perhaps this Adobe-produced video will be of some help to you. It certainly has for me: http://www.video2brain.com/en/premiere-pro-new-features
EDIT: The names are still listed on the right when you're in the fourm discussion index. They're listed as "Top Participants". These are the ones to keep your eye on!

leslie wand May 12, 2012 5:38 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)hi there jay, fancy meeting you here ;-)
(goodness knows what they'll say over at scs - sort of alices resturant -
one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin enough of vegas 11 and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in singin enough of vegas 11 and
walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.)
meanwhile still waiting for my box of goodies from adobe - i loaded cs5.5 on my old laptop, but really don't like the somewhat fussy gui. that said there's a lot of interesting things in that video, along with things undreamed of in vegas, such as speech to text - though how well that works remains to be seen. oh what joy it'll be if it does - all those god damn boring talking heads, chopping 'em up via text will / would be sheer heaven.
i will have to see if my muscle memory hasn't atrophied over the years.
as you, and probably harm, might have gathered, i'm in the lull before the storm. two major projects coming up, one pretty straight forward but requiring a lot of ken burns stills work (any good tutes on doing them in prem anywhere?), but the other, and my main reason for jumping ship from vegas is a fairly complex mini doco with numerous interviews, stills. and assorted footage in a variety of formats. this latter part i'm not too bothered about as i usually simply transcode to .mxf in vegas. what do you suggest in prem?
anyway, i'm just now looking at how to use my bm intensity pro with prem. it looks fairly straightforward (though i did read something about having to use bm codecs which rather frightened me?), and i'm still not understanding the relationship between bm and mercury, but i'm sure it'll sort itself out.
just for ref. this is the system i'm loading it on - i7 / 920 / 12gb ram / gtx 550ti (always current drivers) / bm intensity pro - win7 / sp1 / 64bit
since i shoot hdv, and transcode anything esoteric i get coming in, i think i've enough umph left in it till maybe next year (my pc's are recycled every 3 years or so).
enjoy what's left of the weekend....

8. Re: How soon before the cs6.1 release for PPcs6?
Jay Gladwell May 12, 2012 6:45 AM (in response to leslie wand)Leslie, I've not have any experience with any Blackmagic products, so far the need as never arisen. So in that area, I won't be any help to you.
In CS5, I didn't have much luck with the speech to text, not that I needed it. I thought it was cool and tried it. To be honest, compared to most, I'm a "light user." That means the work we do here doesn 't require "power use" of PPro. Our work is pretty straight forward and "basic" by today's standards--not so much flash and glitter, if you know what I mean.
The good news is if you think the CS5.5 GUI was fussy, you should really like CS6--simplified with the most used items brought forward--very customizable (is there such a word?). I've found over this past year (and with CS6) the more I use PPro, the more I understand it and the more I like it. It's starting to feel comfortable.
We just very recently started shooting with the Atomos Samurai and the workflow has been flawless. Before that, we were ingesting MP4 files from the Sony EX3 without any issues. Again, not much need for transcoding. You might try "MXF OP1a". You'll find it in the Media Encoder's format list--File > Exoprt > Format. Make sure you have the sequence window selected first.
The last big job we had come in (12 45-minute mutli-cam programs) was shot with EX3s, so we were lucky. CS5.5 got me throught it like a... "pro." I was tickled pink! Sooner or later, someone will drop something in our lap that requires transcoding. Guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
Maybe a word of advice... Forget everything you ever knew about Vegas--empty your cup, as the old Japanese Zen Master told his young student, and let the people and training videos fill your cup anew.
You saw it at SCS, much of the posting is just noise, as Harm pointed out so well. The remainder is genuine help from the "Top Participants" and a few others.
Best of luck and enjoy your new journey!

Stay tuned. Especially over the next few weeks. Enough said.

leslie wand May 12, 2012 4:48 PM (in response to Jim Curtis)well, regarding names - i'm on the fence, for years i used an alias, but recently started using my real name in places where i appeared to be in good company.
@ todd - i certainly appreciate your being here. i think it's a major pr move to have your input (even if you can't actually say anything ;-)), i feel there's someone listening, and in a position to help, advise, take matters further. with software as complex as it is nowadays we (the users) really do need to feel someone's listening at the other end....
@ jay - thanks for that. my work isn't unduly 'complex', consisting mainly of shortform doco style, but it can have a lot of assets, and a great deal of fiddling on the timeline. i will take your advice on board and 'forget' my previous workflow and methodolgy (with some trepidation!), and see where ppro takes me....

shooternz May 12, 2012 5:05 PM (in response to leslie wand)My real name also used to be my monniker in the Adobe forums until some years back...when many of us had our identities stolen by a Forum Format update.
It was iretrievable and it upset a lot of people at the time. (Also was much discussed IIRC)
Anyway...for now and after a week of mesing with CS6...I have no needs for any update version and I have not a single disatisfaction with CS6. ( I have one or two regrets but thats another "ongoing" story.)
Full version (paid) happening this week and I will put it to the test in a 48 Hour Film competiton ...next weekend. ( I already have that sort of confidence in CS6)

I am expecting that I will cut this years 48 Hour competition film better and faster than I did last year in CS5.5 (or was it CS5?)
The new features will help. eg The media browsing with hovever, scrub and IN Out point setting ( there is no time to log the rushes in these events so this will be a major help). As will : edit on the fly, timeline trimming etc...

18. Re: How soon before the cs6.1 release for PPcs6?
Jim Curtis May 13, 2012 8:26 AM (in response to shooternz)I've been using CS6 on jobs since the day after it came out. It's been mostly reliable, and only crashed a few times, mostly by using third-party plug-ins. No job-killing bugs have surfaced yet. I haven't lost much work, or had any projects corrupted.
Adobe's been doing a pretty good job lately putting out stable releases. Ae, Ps and Ai, I believe, didn't receive any updates in CS5.5. They were ready for prime time opon their debut.
I am loving the ability to trim and drag items around while the Sequence is playing. Compared to how MC stops playback to do anything but mark ins and outs on the GUI, this is a paradigm shift.
Let me add this about real names: If you're an adult, I think you should stand behind your words. Children shouldn't use their real name on the internet.
Aliases or handles, while having potential to be cute, are often used as a cowardly ploy to snipe and troll. OTOH, a lot of people (not all) who use handles are horrible spellers and communicators, and I'm not surprised they don't want the world to know how awful they are at communicating, which in my view, is a critical skill in the communications industry. If I were an employer (and I have been one), I'd look at sloppy communication skills as a harbinger of a bad work ethic and an inability to grasp complex concepts, which modern professional post-production requires.

Not to mention it's is just plain disrespectful to your readers. It says "I don't care enough to make my words easy to read, so I'm going to make you work harder to understand me."
Lack of capitalization, missing or improper punctuation, misspelled words...all are the bane of Internet communication spawned from lazy teenagers who then become lazy adults.

Keith_Clark May 13, 2012 11:45 AM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)If I may speak freely, my position on aliases is simple. This is the Internet. Everyone uses aliases on the Internet. To me its a privacy issue. I dont need some blow-hard looking me up on the white pages and sending anthrax letters my wife. I realize that's excessive, but some people on the Internet are crazy. This is not the social security office. This is not an application for employment, it's people talking in a designated place about something they enjoy (video editing) and I dont see a reason to use a real name if I'm not on any kind of official business. I used a moniker I made up for this forum, and never in my wildest dreams or imagination would I figure people would "look down on that," this is the Internet. I changed my handle because sometimes I come on here and genuinely need assistance, and appreciate the assistance I get from people who have many more years of expertise than I. there's also times when I can lend my knowledge to others, and would hate to be disregarded because i didn't use the name on my birth certificate. I've been on forums since the mid 90s and have never used my name. *shrugs*
btw, can adobe bring back the forum post count? That was a good feature.
-
22. Re: How soon before the cs6.1 release for PPcs6?
Jim Curtis May 13, 2012 12:37 PM (in response to Keith_Clark)Andy - if that indeed is your real name...
You made some good points. But, please allow me a counterpoint. If you treat people with respect, I don't see why you would fear reprisals. Knowing that some people aren't going to help because of an alias is the price one pays. Whether that is worth paying is a choice we all have to make for ourselves.
Another policy of mine: When posters take the time to give a detailed description of their issue, I'm going to be more likely to try to help. Why should I do all the work? Why should I have to extract the info that should accompany their initial post? There's a saying you often read here, "Help us help you." If I take more time to cover the realm of possible fixes due to vague, scanty or sketchy input, I feel like I've given a boy a fish; not taught him how to catch one.
The Creative Cow and the RED forum require an actual name. I think that's a good policy.
Another reason not to help aliases: Software pirates don't want to use a real name, for obvious reasons.

Todd_Kopriva May 13, 2012 3:04 PM (in response to Keith_Clark)> btw, can adobe bring back the forum post count? That was a good feature.
We've lobbied the forum team hard for that. It should be back soon (within a couple of weeks, I believe), along with some other features killed in the "update" that happened last week.
Regarding aliases:
We don't require that people use real names here, because we know know that some people have good reasons for not wanting to do so. But Adobe employees use their real names here (though not necessarily the whole thing), because we want to set a good example for treating each other like real people on this forum.
It's my opinion based on 25 years of experience on Internet forums and the like (yikes, I'm old) that using real names tends to strengthen the ties between people, because it's harder to think of each other as other than real humans when real names are invloved. That's not always or strictly true, but it is the tendency that I've observed.

In all of my years (was doing Photoshop, when it was NNTP only - even before the Internet), I have only had three stalkers, Jim Simon, Todd and John T. Smith...
Actually, with but a short time, when my screen name "The_Wine_Snob" mysteriously appeared, and then disappeared, I have always used my real name on the Internet. I have had zero problems, but may have just been fortunate?
When Adobe went the HTTP, and the Internet, I did my signup with my real name, and, except as noted, have always done so.
OTOH, when one posts personal info, such as phone numbers, or POP account data, I instruct them to delete that.
Good luck,

27. Re: How soon before the cs6.1 release for PPcs6?
Christian Jolly May 14, 2012 4:04 AM (in response to Steve from NY)To the OP, I've been using CS6 (Creative Cloud) for only a few days but I can say that I've found it to be a lot better than CS5 in some major ways. The first thing I noticed was the playback of AVCHD video. It was pretty good in CS5, especially on my primary machine with all the horsepower and GPU good stuff. Still, when playing back, if I toggled to reverse playback, it was like hitting a wall. The video stalled, hung up, and then started playing (maybe) in 5 seconds or so afterward. That's part of a long GOP format such as AVCHD, but on CS6, I feel like I'm cutting DV footage again and I haven't changed anything on my system.
Now I also was cutting a remote on a laptop this weekend (3 1/2 year old HP DV7) and while this is still a relatively beefy laptop, it's due for a wipe/reinstall on the OS and everything, so I thought I'd just install CS6 and see how it went. The very first thing that happened after I opened PPro and created a project and imported an AVCHD file was a crash. I kind of expected that, dunno why, but I did, so I just laughed, opened PPro CS6 again and it was fine after that. And the playback of GoPro (notoriously difficult) footage and AVCHD footage on the same timeline was really good, not as speedy as my workstation but surprisingly fast and responsive.
Beyond that, I've found a lot to like coming up from CS5 (I skipped CS5.5). There are mostly minor improvements, but these things are cumulative and overall I'm benefitting fromt this upgrade. I have found it to be more stable, more responsive in editing and a lot cleaner interface of course with all the playback customization options.
One thing I was playing with last night was the audio channel mapping, which has a new layout and somewhat better controls. Also, you can now make adjustments to clips that are already in use in a sequence (although the changes do not flow through to active instances of those clips). While I do like the better control options in the channel mapping, it took me a good few minutes to figure it all out. Maybe I could have shaved off a minute or two by reading the help files, but ultimately, this is a much unadvertised example of the kinds of little changes that are going to help my workflow.
Probably my least favorite change is the overall interface. I don't care too much for the default CS6 interface (and of course, like all things Adobe, I can change it to my liking). But I did find it to be unfortunate that the shortcut bar at the top with the tools and the workspace dropdown shortcut were gone, and I didn't see yet how to "add" that back other than opening an older project to have PPro import my old interface and then customize from there.
So my biggest "dislike" on PPro CS6 so far is something that is totally customizable anyway. It's not like I ever left the default PPro interface intact before, so customizing it now is not a big deal.
Do I feel like a beta tester with my purchase? So far, certainly not. I'm cutting 4 projects this week so after the next 60 hours of editing maybe something will get in my face and make me angry. I'll certainly be vocal about it so everyone knows.
I don't think anyone coming from another NLE such as Vegas or FCP would be disappointed with PPro CS6. There would almost certainly be a learning curve at first, but the features are powerful and so many things are happening under the hood that we don't even notice it sometimes. For PPro editors coming from CS5, there's a lot of good reasons to upgrade. And if you're coming from CS4 or CS3, then it'll probably feel like an entirely new editor in many ways, all of them good.

Yes... hopefully you won't have any of the problems that have been reported

It's my opinion based on 25 years of experience on Internet forums and the like (yikes, I'm old) that using real names tends to strengthen the ties between people, because it's harder to think of each other as other than real humans when real names are invloved.
and here all these years i just assumed all you guys were just not able to come up with anything more original than your actual names

FWIW, my name is my own creation, not what I was born with.

WHOA! Adobe Secrets!
FWIW, my name is the one I was born with, but people ask me all. The. Time....if it's my "real" name.
I have insisted upon naming any daughter I ever might have "Holly Jolly" and of course my wife thinks I'm joking. If a girl ever pops out, she's gonna be very angry when the birth certificate comes back and she sees that I took care of those birth certificate details while the docs were...uh....cleaning up. You know how it goes.

Bill Hunt May 16, 2012 6:00 PM (in response to Christian Jolly)In my case, being a III, should we have had a boy-child, it would have been logical to name him W A Hunt IV, but then I could imagine the other kids teasing him, calling him "Ivy." I decided to pass on that option, though it might have made a son a mean "fella."
Now, I just name my Bulldogs for either wines, or some aspect of Augusta National Golf Course. That seems to work.

davidbeisner2010 May 23, 2012 10:11 AM (in response to Steve from NY)I've been using CS6 since the day it was released and have had no issues with it at all, though I've found I preferred the CS5.5 editing layout, so I switched my layout back to what I was comfortable with. I reckon I could change over time, but I've just become so quick with the GUI, that the changes slowed me down.
The only issue I've seen so far was the lack of any content files for Encore, which they attempted to fix right off, but the fix still was missing 99% of the content. I've not gone back to see if it got re-fixed yet, but aside from that, I've been happy with it!
