1. Re: What is the purpose of the foreground/background color?
station_two May 17, 2012 10:08 PM (in response to ksemple)Please read the Help files. Start with "Creating, Opening and Importing images".
• Select a canvas color option.
White Fills the background or first layer with white, the default background color.
Background Color Fills the background or first layer with the current background color.
Transparent Makes the first layer transparent, with no color values. The resulting document has a single, transparent layer as its contents.
The Foreground Color is chosen for the brush, shapes, etc.
Eventually, you want to read the entire content of the Help files, and maybe, hopefully, a book like " Photoshop Classroom in a Book".
Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its long and steep learning curve.
Take a class at a community college. Teaching you Photoshop from the ground up far exceeds the scope of the forum.

ksemple May 18, 2012 8:31 AM (in response to station_two)Station Two, am actually learning Ps from the ground up, am currently viewing a beginner tutorial on Class on Demand.com. So I thought the forum would be a place for me to ask questions that am not able to ask a instructor on a tutorial!

Noel Carboni May 18, 2012 8:42 AM (in response to ksemple)Teaching really basic concepts might be a bit beyond the scope of this forum.
The foreground and background colors are that which are used by tools, such as (for example) the paintbrush that use colors in their operation.
So you might select a red color for the foreground color, choose the paintbrush, then paint red strokes on your image.
Some tools use two colors - for example the Gradient Tool. That's when the background color comes in.

emil emil May 18, 2012 9:14 AM (in response to ksemple)Some tools like brushes and gradients can be set to use the two, foreground and background colors. And other operations like Fill can be set to use one of the two colors. Shortcuts are Alt + Delete to fill with foreground color and Ctrl + Delete with background color

ksemple May 18, 2012 12:00 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Fellas,
Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna use other sources to learn the basics of the PS. But am just saying, I use to forum to ask questions the instructor might go over on the tutorial and I do not understand, but its just that I cannot ask a question over the tutorial.
I've understand so much more about it now since you guys have explained it here for me.

emil emil May 18, 2012 12:26 PM (in response to ksemple)I also find it useful, especially when color painting with a brush, to store a color temporarily that is not worth saving it as a swatch. Simply pressing the X key on the keyboard will swap the foreground and background colors.
And this is also very convenient when painting on masks with black and white.

Ah, but you can certainly pause the tutorial and pull the Help files in Photoshop. There's a lot of good info in there.
It's not that folks here are not willing to help, they are and this thread proves it. It's just that your question revealed you had never used Photoshop and had not done any reading on it.
Feel free to come back and ask questions when you really get stuck. But you have to do your due diligence and learn the basics first. Otherwise you won't even know what questions to ask and how.
