Mathias17 May 21, 2012 1:58 PM (in response to artsyvom)You need to learn your Appearance Panel better, that's all. Took me a while, too.
Path Cleanup will zap paths that are Grouped and have fills/strokes at the Group level, but no fill/stroke at the path level.
Just play with your Appearance Panel.

artsyvom May 21, 2012 2:09 PM (in response to Grant H)Thanks Grant! When i checked the appearance panel it wasn't that i had more than one fill, but as i was clicking around on it while watching the appearance panel, i discovered that several of the letters were compound paths. So when i ungrouped the compound paths they had no fill, then after i re-filled them they didn't get deleted when i did cleanup. Dunno why, but whateve works!

artsyvom May 21, 2012 2:15 PM (in response to Mathias17)OK - very interesting Mathias! I didn't know there was a difference. Could you expand on this some? Thanks

APPEARANCE PANEL : The Deceiver
Here we have two squares grouped: Notice the orange stroke is at the Group Level. With the Group selected, the Appearance Panel shows the stroke present. It's not assigned to each square individually. It's assigned to the group. If I were to enter the group and draw another square, it would automatically inherit the same stroke, since it's assigned to the group.
And here I'm showing just the blue square selected, with the Direct Selection Tool, bypassing the Group Level. Notice, no stroke assigned to the blue square.
If you really want your mind blown, surf this thread a little.
