System freeze after prolonged Flash usage

Hello,

I stumbled across this thread as i am having exactly the same problems as Fossil, although he has been quiet so i guess disabling hardware acceleration worked for him. However this is not working for me, I have sent two graphics cards back on the strength of this issue and im still getting it on my third card! Firstly my system:

Intel Core I7-3930K 3.20GHz Socket 2011 12MB Cache

32GB RAM Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2000MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.65V

Asus P9X79 PRO S2011 Intel X79 DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Corsair 120GB SSD

Samsung Synch Master MD230x3 Monitors

Windows 7 Pro (64bit)

Now because im using eyefinity monitors i bought this card:

PowerColor HD 6870 2GB GDDR5

First one failed instantly when i played any sort of flash video, on advice from retailer i sent it back (they said it was a known issue with some AMD 6870 cards, Second one came back and was slightly better which was odd but the same problem, i formatted the drive and started from scratch only installing the latest drivers from Powercolor rather than using the supplied disk and then upgrading.

After opening multiple websites using flash such as you tube, bbc news videos etc system just freezes forcing a reboot. I used core temp plus the video card supplied performance monitor, i saw no increase in system temps, fan speeds or power being supplied. Supplier would only refund my money as the card went out of stock which is a pain because this is one of the few that support 6 monitors via mini dp port at a reasonable price So I ordered the following card:

PowerColor HD 7870 PCS+ 2GB GDDR5

Only supports 4 monitors but as my board is pci 3.0 i thought i would try a card that supports it to see if this solves the problem.

Well it didn’t! After about an hour of usage with flash websites i get a system freeze. If i uninstall flash, i dont get any problems at all.

Adobe, i need some help here guys because this is not normal and if there is a problem with the latest hardware architectures then I need a fix.

Hi Regan2000,

Yes, after months of issues the problems I was having finally got resolved, though it required installing an older flash player in order to facilitate turning off hardware acceleration. (NVIDIA and the Flash Player did not like each other).

The best thing you can do is start a new thread with the issues you are having.  Adobe Staff want to create only one thread per issue and you are more likely to get an answer to help you if you post a separate thread regarding your problems.

Once you've done that, if you don't get an answer after a few days, I would message the staff member who helped me in this thread to let them know you posted a Flash Player issue that you would like help resolving.

I branched this to a new thread.

I also use an eyefinity setup, though I've got 7970 with ATI's 12.3 Catalyst drivers.  I haven't run into any system hangs with prolonged video, but it's possible I just haven't watched enough.  Can you follow this FAQ which describes a few troubleshooting steps (which you've most likely done) and information we'll need to further investigate?  Please post back with the bug URL when you're done.

Yeah i was not sure about creating a new thread as the original problem had not been solved but thanks for the update Fossil, glad you got it working on an older version however i dont think thats a satisfactory solution from Adobe, we cant all stay on older versions of flash as some websites will not funtion without the latest player.

I am following your advice and yes i have done just about everything apart from the bug report thing and this interesting step:

In addition to updating your video drivers and disabling Flash Player hardware acceleration, please try the following steps:

Windows:

  1. Close all browsers
  2. Open an explorer window
  3. Navigate to the following folders and delete the contents
    • %appdata%\adobe\Flash Player\
    • %appdata%\macromedia\

Finally, restart your browser and try again

I have no idea why that step should have any impact on this issue, however I have been running flash websites with HA turned off (this is one of the first things i tried on the previous graphics cards and i still experience the failure) for about an hour now (10 open at the same time + 3 or 4 flash youtube videos playing) and all looks good so far.

Note, i had performed some archiving last night which caused high disk i/o + cpu usage over a period of about 14 hours and i did not experience a system crash.

I will update you later today or as soon as i experience the failure.

I have a very similar setup

Same processor and Motherboard.

The symptoms you describe are identical to what I am experiencing continued freezing requiring a hard re boot

when running movies in YouTube. Sometimes in seconds and other times several minutes

I have disabled hardware acceleration but it does not make any difference

What version of the motherboard bios are you running.

I am running the original supplied with the board 0605

Thanks for responding, sorry that your having similar problems but glad its not just me .

I have not flashed the BIOS so I am at factory default settings like you and nothing is overclocked.

Incidentally i tried a different graphics card when my original powercolor 6870 showed problems to rule out motherboard and other components. I used a basic NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT low profile card and the system worked flawlessly (i did unistall all AMD product using driver sweeper 3.0 in safe mode)

We will not get a response out of Adobe until next week due to Holidays, also i have a contact @ Powercolor in the US (there is no representation in the UK apart of a distribution centre, i don’t know what your location is Racer), so I am parallel troubleshooting this problem with both parties.

I did not buy this setup as a games machine and im frustrated that i had to dump the 6870 card for the 7870 which has compromised me, i selected my components for longevity and scalability. The reason its a serious issue for me is that this is my business machine, I am an SQL Database specialist running a micro global company and have to VPN into many servers across EMEA and NA. For instance, If i am RD'd into an SQL server and running queries on one monitor, then im running a monitoring tool to analyse the performance of those queries on another monitor and then on the final monitor im running a small SQL blog website which uses flash to help me troubleshoot a problem. If my system freezes due the flash blog or maybe a youtube lecture/tutorial, i can lose hours of work which annoying.

Hello Regan

I am also in the UK.

My initial set up was a Gigabyte 560Ti graphics card running a 30inch monitor and

2 x 24 inch monitors thru a Matrox Triple Head to Go adaptor.

This enables me to run 3 monitors from one graphics card.

I have used this set up for many years on a couple of PC and never had a problem.

Like you I do not use my setup for gaming.

I am retired and trade the stock markets worldwide.

Today I disconnected my Matrox adaptor and just run the single 30inch monitor with several You tube movies running.

It ran without a problem for over 2 hrs ( this is a first ).

I have now connected one of the 24inch monitors to the other DVI port on the graphics card and this has been running

You tube videos for over 1 hour with no problem?????????

I will leaving it running for another few hours.

I am away on vacation from this evening until the 18th April. So will not be able to add any more feedback.

I hope by the time I return you have had success in resolving this dilemma.

Hello,

I am having the same issue. Since I installed my 7970 my entire system freezes randomly with flash video loaded in the web browser. Turning off acceleration didn't seem to help either. I thought it was Chrome, but I think I've narrowed it down to Flash. Using 12.3 drivers.

Fwiw, I also have a 7970 with the 12.3 drivers on Win 7x64 but I'm not seeing any freezes when viewing Flash video content.  Does the Flash Plugin crash or is your system just freezing?

Hi Chris!

The entire machine freezes.

I uninstalled Flash totally from the machine, and since then I've had no system freezes. I am going to continue running with it uninstalled for a little while longer to see if that really cleared the problem up. It sure is difficult surfing without Flash though. Even file attachments and other forums and applications use Flash! Didn't even realise that. Testing YouTube's HTML5 controls as a result of all this.

I suppose if this issue isn't widespread it must be something about my specific system 😕

I can confirm that unistalling flash solves my problem but that is not an overall solution .  Chris, whats the latest, the bug has been submitted for a while now and i have heard nothing back.

The bug is still "Open/To Track".  I suspect we're having problems reproducing this internally.  I'm also a bit surprised that the bug has zero votes for it, which leads me to believe that this is not a wide spread issue.  If you're encountering this bug, please take a minute and vote for Regan2000's bug here:

Hello,

yes with Hardware Acceleration disabled I still crash.

So far, I haven't crashed yet with Flash uninstalled. I attached my DXDIAG to my problem report as well.

I have not tried completely wiping my ATI drivers with some sort of third party driver cleaner etc. etc.

While using Chrome with a Flash website open, the system froze again.

At this point I think trends are pointing toward some sort of issue with Flash itself.

I'm going to uninstall and then reinstall the Catalyst drivers and see if that helps.

Update on my situation.

With Flash Uninstalled and not using Flash at all, the system is stable.

When using Chrome with Flash, the system would freeze up randomly and require a hard reboot.

I uninstalled the ATI drivers, all of them using the Control Panel. I rebooted and remained with whatever default drivers Windows 7 chose.

Since then, even when watching youtube, leaving youtube running in the background while playing games etc. the system seems to be stable.

I'll continue to use the system and then advise on further developments.

I'll add my $0.02 here - have been having this problem for some time, and have not been able to find a solution. At first I assumed it was a problem with player - but I've updated several times since this started happening. Then, I thought, maybe my NVidia driver - nope. Updated that too, and I'm using the latest and greatest.

With Flash player not installed, my system has no problems (except I can't see Flash video). After installing, Flash videos longer than 4-5 minutes crash the system - always with a loss of video, and audio, sometimes with a loud buzzing in the speakers. In all cases, the system is still running, but I have lost all video and control and have to hard reboot.

Windows 7 x64, SP1, Asus CG8350, i7-2600 @ 3.4GHz, 8Gb RAM, NVidia 9600 GT running 296.10. All drivers and system software up to date.

Hope we see something soon!

Yes this is exactly what happens. Thus far with Flash Player not installed, I can use Chrome to view flash videos although I have not looked at many recently.

No hardware changes here - my hardware has been consistent for almost a year now, and I didn't start having these problems until a few months ago, maybe February/March timeframe.

Can you guys install our 11.3 beta 3 release and report back on the bug if it helped?  The bug status is currently set to Open/ToTest.  I've done prolonged testing with my 7970 and the 12.4 drivers but have not seen any system hangs or freezing.

I uninstalled 11.2, then installed 11.3 beta 3 from your link and had the same trouble.

Playing a video within Firefox 12.0 (so I am using the plugin rather than the ActiveX version) and the first video, 6:59, played all the way through. The second video, 11:15, after approximately 8 minutes or so, the screen went blank and the sound changed to the motorboat buzzing sound. My computer was still on, but no way to get control back. Had to hard reboot.

I see there is now a new NVidia driver available (301.42) and I'll try that next.
