Flash Player won't install

I have a new MacBook, and just installed Apple's latest OS update; running Safari 5.1.6. I can get Flash Player to download to my Mac, but after going through the installation procedure,  it doesn't seem to be installed. The Flash icon is there on the desktop, but it just goes through the installation process again. The plug-in is located in the Internet plug-ins folder.
