1. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
Wade_Zimmerman May 31, 2012 9:26 PM (in response to photodrawken)That is not going to work the way you want it to.
You can only map to one surface at a time so you will have match thre instances of the symbol manually.

2. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
photodrawken May 31, 2012 9:37 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Thanks, I was afraid of that.
So, I would have to
- Draw a flattened box shape.
- Position the text as I want it to align.
- Split the text line into the appropriate sections, and create symbols for each.
- Extrude the rectangle into a 3D box.
- Apply the appropriate symbols to each side of the extrusion, individually.
If that's the only way to do it, it would obviously not work if I wanted the "box" shape to have rounded edges.
Hmmmm...I think it's time for me to finally learn to use TrueSpace....

Wade_Zimmerman May 31, 2012 10:06 PM (in response to photodrawken)I just took the one symbol and repositioned it on the three surfacesas the text will crop automtically as it is off the mapped surface so you don't have to cut it just repositioned it in the Mappin UI.

5. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
photodrawken May 31, 2012 10:14 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)OK, but how does one get the text to match up from one side to another? Especially if I want the line of text not horizontal, but running up from lower left to upper right?

6. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
Wade_Zimmerman May 31, 2012 10:38 PM (in response to photodrawken)You have to align it manually you can rotate the symbol resize it and reposition it and there is a live preview on the canvas of what you are doing.
Just move it around.
You'll be fine.

yes, THAT will work. Why don't you try before complaining? You'll need true smooth points in the shape you're extruding. Then you'll get one big area to map your art on.

See this Web site:

It's a really neat thing called a "dictionary", where you can learn the difference between "complaining" and an "observation".

Monika Gause Jun 1, 2012 2:46 AM (in response to photodrawken)Ken,
if you had really tried the box with round edges, you would have observed that it will indeed work.
not too long ago I have posted this on the forum: http://vektorgarten.de/img/tut/map-container.png
It's one map and there's no need to piece it together like in a jigsaw

11. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
photodrawken Jun 1, 2012 3:15 PM (in response to Monika Gause)Monika,
Yes, I've really tried this on a box with rounded edges.
Thanks for the link to the image you did a while ago. It got me thinking about changing my approach, so I first drew a rounded rectangle and used it as a plan view (the bottom face) for the box. Then I extruded it (without using a bevel) to create the box. That left me with 10 "faces" to use in the mapping window, which is an improvement from the 40 "faces" I got using my original method.
Although there is no need to split the original line of text (as I first asked); for this example I still had to manually place the symbol on 5 faces. That's more than a bit fiddly, but do-able for sure:
I didn't get one large face encompassing all the sides and rounded edges, as your explanation seemed to imply. (This is using Ai CS6.)

12. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
Monika Gause Jun 1, 2012 3:26 PM (in response to photodrawken)I can do this with 3 faces, one being the large one round the object.
As I said: you need smooth points. Really smooth points. Not just points that look like so.

13. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
photodrawken Jun 1, 2012 3:33 PM (in response to Monika Gause)How so, then? Are you saying that starting with a rounded rectangle is not the way to do it?

14. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
Monika Gause Jun 1, 2012 3:51 PM (in response to photodrawken)Yes, you can do that. But the rounded rectangle only has corner points. You need to convert them to smooth points.

17. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
photodrawken Jun 1, 2012 9:58 PM (in response to photodrawken)Just a final note going back to my original question: Starting with a Rounded Rectangle, I can convert the anchor points to smooth and move their handles out to get a fairly sharp corner. It's not a crisp corner, but for the purposes of mapping art to the box, it's good enough and the output raster image reads fairly well as a non-rounded corner box:

18. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
Wade_Zimmerman Jun 1, 2012 10:07 PM (in response to photodrawken)You know photodrawken you can mark some of the postings about using rounded corners as "helpful" including your last post.
Other users might like to have it pointed out to them when they do a search.

19. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
photodrawken Jun 1, 2012 10:14 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Done. Wound up with quite a few "helpful" suggestions, since my original question led to a different approach than what I had asked about, but if it helps others navigate through all these posts that's cool.

21. Re: Wrap a line of text around 3 sides of a 3D "box"?
photodrawken Jun 1, 2012 10:35 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)I can do that, but won't, since your first reply answered my question exactly as I had asked it. I've added Monika's post with the link to her image as "helpful".
Just a limitation of the "correct" and "helpful" system, but I think this discussion as it stands with the marked messages should be understandable for future readers.
