¿Possible to place paragraph 'rule' under trailing blank spaces?

Is it possible to place paragraph 'rule' under trailing blank spaces?

FYI, I am writing equations using tables, and use a horizontally-split cell to hold numerator (top) and denominator (bottom). If the numberator has fewer characters than the denominator, the division bar (in my case, the 'rule') is too narrow.  I would like to add spaces before and after the numberator to make the rule match with the denominator, which gives the equation a nice look. Blank spaces before the numberator text carry a rule, but blank spaces AFTER the numberator text do not—neither hard spaces, nor em-spaces, nor en-space, nor any other I can find. (Using the bottom cell stroke as the division line doesn't work for my project.)  Thanks in advance.
