1. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
Nancy O. Jun 22, 2012 12:31 PM (in response to cyberbaffled)Create a whole new site definition called SiteName2.
Delete the old site definition.

2. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
cyberbaffled Jun 22, 2012 2:31 PM (in response to Nancy O.)I had tried this but I tried again and it still didn't work. And I just noticed that on page 828 of David Sawyer's Dreamweaver Missing Manual there's a "Note" describing this error and claiming the site's been set up regardless. This isn't my experience. Somehow, I have to be able to enter Sawyer's designated name and URL without getting the error. Also, finally, the reason I didn't get a reply button for Nancy O's reply was that I was logged into Adobe's product purchase site using another email address and password.

3. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
Nancy O. Jun 22, 2012 2:45 PM (in response to cyberbaffled)OK. So let me get this sequence straight if I may. You created a site definition but you added a slash to your URL which created path problems in your site. When you remove the Slash from Sites > Manage Site > Edit... DW isn't holding onto the changes. Is that about right?

4. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
cyberbaffled Jun 22, 2012 3:08 PM (in response to Nancy O.)Yes, that's exactly right. And every time I get anywhere close to the Name and URL that Sawyer uses for his tutorial, DW restores the mistaken \ and issues an error that / cannot be part of the path definition. No strategy I've contrived enables DW to forget about the initial error.

Nancy O. Jun 22, 2012 3:20 PM (in response to cyberbaffled)OK. Delete your DW Personal Configuration Folder. DW will create a new one.

6. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
cyberbaffled Jun 22, 2012 3:50 PM (in response to Nancy O.)That deletion was my first response to the problem. It occurs to me that Sawyer encountered this problem with a correctly formed URL. Therefore, the fact I ended a URL with a \ instead of a / may be a red herring. I'm wondering if the problem isn't the URL Sawyer wants placed in the Local Site Folder: http://www.cosmofarmer.com/cosmo_shop. This isn't "local". Sawyer is demonstrating a testing server, but I'm wondering if that URL isn't appropriate for the New Site process. In that case, the reason DW states that the error is a / that's not appropriate for the path is that it's the second / in the URL beginning http:// and that address in its entirety isn't appropriate. This all occurs on pages 823-826 of Sawyer's "DW4.0 The Missing Manual".

8. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
cyberbaffled Jun 22, 2012 4:54 PM (in response to Nancy O.)Nancy, the primary pertinent information in your screen prints is that the address in the Local Root Folder is indeed local; its on your C drive. The address Sawyer wants to use is a URL for a remote site. I think this is the underlying problem, and I'll try to proceed in his example to see if the error can be ignored as he says. Also, I'm using DW5.5. What worked in DW4 may not work in DW5.5. Particularly, there's the issue of why I can't clear the initial URL with the erroneous \ in its path from DW4's files; whereever that may be. Deleting the WinFileCache*.dat file didn't have any effect.

9. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
adninjastrator Jun 22, 2012 6:07 PM (in response to cyberbaffled)First, I'd like to defer to Nancy on (almost) ALL issues related to DreamWeaver! She has knowledge and background that I can only aspire to.
But let me remind you that you do NOT need to "Define" your sites in order to be able to use DW! DreamWeaver will work just file with the plain old folder/file structure of your machines operating system.
At any one time, I may have about 20 active sites running and I use DW to edit and update ALL of them. I have defined ZERO of the sites.... !!
OK, I'm out of the closet! I'm a non-traditional DW user!
Since I don't use it, I'm really not sure of the advantages of "defining" a site. Everything DW can do by defining a site can also be done otherwise.
So please don't feel that just because you are having problems defining a site, that DW can't work for you.
DW can open and edit any applicable files on any drive on your computer. DW can link to any other file on your computer with the "Point to File" feature in the Properites Panel (images, other Web pages, etc).
And for FTP, I'd suggest a real FTP program, like Filezilla or SmartFTP.... more powerful and versatile than the built in FTP of DW!
So if for some reason you feel that you need to "Define" your sites... go for it!!
But also realize that "Defining" a site is just not necessary to take advantage of most of DW.
Best wishes,
Adninjastrator

10. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
cyberbaffled Jun 22, 2012 6:55 PM (in response to adninjastrator)I agree. Nancy has been a great resource over at least the past year. With respect to the immediate issue, if worse comes to worse and I can't get around the problem that David Sawyer himself encountered, then I'll try your solution of not defining the site needed for the test server.

11. Re: "local site folder" field adds \ and issues error that / isn't a valid path component
MurraySummers Jun 23, 2012 6:44 AM (in response to cyberbaffled)It's David Sawyer McFarland - just so you'll know.
Let me back up a bit and ask what is the actual path to your local root folder (the one that you have in your site definition)? And also, what is the value that you see under advanced settings for the Web URL? Finally, what is the path that you see in the Root Directory field of the Remote site's definition?
One more question - are you using DW4 or DWCS5.5? You mention both and I'm not sure which applies.

cyberbaffled Jun 25, 2012 12:41 PM (in response to adninjastrator)I just noticed the "correct helpful" markable category. I'm giving you this credit because I've discovered that if I skip this step in McFarland's exposition of testing servers, it doesn't diminish his subsequent pedagogy.

cyberbaffled Jun 25, 2012 12:44 PM (in response to MurraySummers)Please see my reply to Adninjastrator. I'm giving you a "helpful" on this because when I wrote David Sawyer I was writing from (flawed) memory.
