1. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
RjL190365 Jun 24, 2012 12:08 PM (in response to notex235)Do not use your WD Blacks in any parity RAID. This is because they have TLER permanently disabled. Also, do not use software RAID for RAID 5: The performance of a software RAID 5 is extremely slow - in fact, often slower than even a single disk! This is not because of the low sequential transfer speeds, but because of the extremely high latency in the software controller and also because the software RAID does not utilize the CPU in an efficient manner.
And mismatched disks should not be RAIDed together. This will limit your choices for the disk setup.

notex235 Jun 24, 2012 12:20 PM (in response to RjL190365)ah i see, then i should get a a dedicated controller it seems but is there one around $100?
if no then is there a set up that you recommend?
the disks will be caviar blacks and all matching 3tb hdds

3. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
RjL190365 Jun 24, 2012 12:27 PM (in response to notex235)Again, the Caviar Blacks should not be used in any RAID besides RAID 0 or RAID 1. And again, there are absolutely no worthwhile RAID controllers that cost anywhere close to $100. All of those cheap RAID controllers are also software-based, and (combined with the additional overhead of an add-in card) are actually slower than onboard. You will need to spend much more money (say, $500 or more) for a good hardware RAID controller.

notex235 Jun 24, 2012 12:30 PM (in response to RjL190365)then it seems like putting them in singles are the best option for now?
or would you think that raid 0 for the 3tb are worthwile?

Yes.
or would you think that raid 0 for the 3tb are worthwile?
No, unless you have a good backup plan.

notex235 Jun 24, 2012 12:47 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)i have a raid 1 external i was going to use as backup
but i might just use the drives by themselves
thank you both!

JSS1138 Jun 24, 2012 1:44 PM (in response to RjL190365)Do not use your WD Blacks in any parity RAID. This is because they have TLER permanently disabled.
You sure it's permanent?
"The WDTLER utility allows for the enabling or disabling of the TLER parameter in the hard disk's firmware settings allowing the user to determine the best setting for his particular usage"

8. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
notex235 Jun 24, 2012 1:55 PM (in response to JSS1138)well im wondering if i should replace my caviar black for something that will do raid 0 and then back them up with the 3tb instead
-
9. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
RjL190365 Jun 24, 2012 2:08 PM (in response to JSS1138)It's permanent on the newer drives (made after September 2009). WD no longer offers or supports WDTLER. And WDTLER does not work at all on the newer firmware of the WD Blacks (the program runs, but the TLER function is grayed out and non-selectable, and locked to Disabled).

10. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
Harm Millaard Jun 24, 2012 2:10 PM (in response to notex235)For raid0 they work OK, it is on parity raids (3, 5, 6) that they give huge problems.

11. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
notex235 Jun 24, 2012 2:15 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)oh i see then it seems that
then would putting raid 0 with 4 drives and backing up with the 3tb be ideal compared to using
2 of raid 0 1tb drives and backing them up?
-
12. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
RjL190365 Jun 24, 2012 2:17 PM (in response to notex235)No, in this case: You should not mix different models of drives in the same RAID 0 array. You have only three of the WD Blacks (based on your original post), and drives of completely different capacities and completely different platter densities do not work well together in any single RAID volume.

13. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
notex235 Jun 24, 2012 2:21 PM (in response to RjL190365)no i meant that the blacks would be in a raid 0 and backup up the content not via the same raid volume to the 3tb.
essentially media would be on the 3tb and not on the blacks therefore maybe using raid 1 with the 3tb to back up and raid 0 with 4 caviar blacks might be better?

14. Re: Build is finally done--hard drive left
JEShort01 Jun 24, 2012 3:04 PM (in response to notex235)I would recommend:
M4 256GB SSD: Win7 and programs
1st 2xWD Black RAID 0 pair: projects, media
2nd 2xWD Black RAID 0 pair: Adobe scratch, cache, Win7 swap, render outputs
1st Seagate 3TB: internal "backup" for boot drive "drive image" + backup of all data, projects, media, etc. on the 1st RAID 0 array; you don't need to backup anything ont the 2nd RAID 0.
2nd Seagate 3GB for external, preferably off-site back archive (clone of what's on internal 3TB); I use Beyond Compare for conventiently "cloning" data (not the same as doing image cloning

Jim

JSS1138 Jun 25, 2012 4:57 PM (in response to RjL190365)And WDTLER does not work at all on the newer firmware of the WD Blacks
Good to know. Thanks.
