    Tip:  non-destructive texture

If you're working on an image with a lot of layers, and you want to add some texture, instead of merging all the layers into a new one and applying the texture to that merged layer, you can:

      1. Create a new "Overlay" layer above the layers you want to have the texture.  You need to use Layer...New from the main menu bar and select the "Overlay" mode and the "Fill with neutral color" option.
      2. Apply your texture to that overlay layer.

      For example:

      texture layers.png

      For this image effect:

      Lighthouse_Painting 02.png

      The advantages of doing this:

      • If you don't like the effect, you only need to delete that one layer to start again.
      • You can adjust the opacity of the layer to fine-tune the texture effect.
      • You can create more than one texture layer, using whichever texture is appropriate for the final output.

This works for the Filter...Noise...Add Noise, as well as several textures from the Filter Gallery, including Film Grain.
