1. Re: masks in CS6
c.pfaffenbichler Jun 27, 2012 8:06 AM (in response to robirdman1)When there is no Layer Mask visible in the Layers Panel then there is no Layer Mask.
Change the Background Layer to a regular one if necessary (double-click it) and then either add a Layer Mask (Layers > Layer Mask > …) or use the Selection Tool of choice before doing so.

One nice little improvement in CS6 is that you no longer have to go the route of first changing the Background to a Layer in order to add a mask. Just click on the Layer Mask icon.

the quick mask selected the desired area well and then I could go no farther.Did you use the [Refine Edge] tool and change the Output To: setting to New Layer with Layer Mask?
That tutorial works pretty well on the image you've chosen. Cute subjects, by the way... What are these animals?

robirdman1 Jun 28, 2012 6:36 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)What you did looks great, but I still can't get started.
The instructions say:
In the Layers panel, select the layer or group.
Do one of the following:To create a mask that reveals the entire layer, click the Pixel Mask
button in the Masks panel, or click the Add Layer Mask
button in the Layers panel.Again I'm not seeing these buttons in my layer panel.
Both tutorials start off this way and so I'm stuck.
they are tree kangaroos.

10. Re: masks in CS6
charles badland Jun 28, 2012 6:50 AM (in response to robirdman1)CS6 does not list a separate Mask Panel anymore.
You are on Photoshop CS6, right?
Not Photoshop Elements 6 (2005).

And Photoshop CS6 has a Properties Panel, no Masks Panel anymore.

c.pfaffenbichler Jun 28, 2012 7:11 AM (in response to robirdman1)So is the issue resolved?
And was it about keeping one’s Panels in a non-confusing arrangement?

robirdman1 Jun 28, 2012 7:17 AM (in response to robirdman1)This is like torture.
I used the quick select tool and added the layer mask, and was ready for the next part of the russel brown tutorial, only to be stopped where it says to press the invert button and again I am clueless as I find no such button.

robirdman1 Jun 28, 2012 8:32 AM (in response to robirdman1)I was finally able to get beyond and follow the rest of that tutorial with my own image. the results looked not as good as that nor as Noel's. I may try again with a background other than the artificial green that didn't blend so well.
thanks to all who are so helpful. Much different from the Cubase forum where no one may ever answer anything, it seems.
