install disappearing from FireFox 11.0 - 4 times a day

Hi,

I need to state first that I am usng w2000 SP5.  This is a clean install, with no mal-ware.  I understand that the OS is not supported.  But, my other computer has a defective motherboard and unable to replace it now.

I am using the last version of Firefoc that was available for w2000, ( ver 11.0 )

I have modified Firefox NOT to UPDATE plugins.  (Because new plugins dont;'t work in W2000.Firefox 11.0)

I have installed the last verson of Flash that works in W2000 also. ( fp_10.1.102.64_and_9.0.289.0_archive )

All works as normal.  No crashes. No issues.

Except, that the install magiclally dissappears as a plugin from FireFox.

It disappears 3 or 4 times a day. Usually after I open Firefox a few hours later.

But, it is still in installed Programs list on computer.

I have been re-installing it everytime, which is VERY annoying.

I have disabled Flash from automatic updates also.

There must be something that is checking to install a new version, and deleting my current install.

But, I can't find it.

I have tried many versions of flash, and all do the same thing.

So, I believe the problem is in FireFox.

I am posting my problem there also.

Please help me.  TIA

It sounds like you might be running into a Windows permission issue, please try the instructions in this FAQ:

How do I fix Windows permission problems with Flash Player?

Thanks,

Chris

Multiple missing file errors running the batch file ...

MSVCP60.dll not in program path

I searched C: drive .... no such file

Did the batch file run succesfully without this file?

Is this file Ok to download for Windows 2000 pro SP5 ?

Odd, the SubInACL application from Microsoft (which is what the batch file calls) says that Win2k should be supported.  When Flash Player disappears, check to see what files are present in your windows\system32\macromed\flash folder.  I'm curious if the files are actually uninstalled.  You might want to compare the contents of this folder when it's working and then again when it's not.

Never download DLL files from the Internet; they may not match your installed OS, and just downloading them will not register them properly.

Download and install the Visual C++ redistributable to obtain the missing files: http://download.microsoft.com/download/vc60pro/Update/1/W9XNT4/EN-US/VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe

SubInACL is fully supported on Windows 2000; the folder to check for Flash Player on W2K is C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Flash

Your diagnosis seems to spot on target.

Preliminary results are good.

Clicking "Ok" to the missing file ( about 40 or 50 times ) until the batch file completed seems to have worked Ok.

I will post back in a few days. .... all is good so far.

And, I will post this at Mozilla, if this problem is resloved

It just happened again ....

The contents of the C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Flash Folder - Ok.

Contents are still present.

So, this means its a FireFox problem?

At least it was 3 days later , and not 4 times a day ...

It is time to give us some more information: what makes you think that Flash Player disappears?  What are the exact symptoms?

Can you still see the Flash animation at http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html - or what do you see instead?

"

This download does not install ... It unpacked a file called " vcredist.exe " size 1,765kb.

Clicking  file does nothing.

As for 'disappearing" .... It is not listed as a plugin in Firefox 11.0

This is the last version of Firefox that works with W2K.

And, since I had to re-install ( for Firefox )  I instaled the 10.1.102.64 version again.

As I mentioned before, Flash is still listed in installed programs. And, this time I have confirmed the files install still exist in the system32 folder.

You will have to wait until it is gone again..... before I can use your test page.

But I believe it will show it is not installed in Firefox.

It just "disappeared" again in the middle of browsing.

No warnings, no messages, just gone.

1  System32 still has files.

2  Tools: Add-ons: Plugins:   -- Missing.

3  Help : Troubleshooter - Enabled Plugins:  Not Listed.

Is there a way to "Hard Code" the "swf" extension to the System32 folder?

I'm waiting this time for someone to help BEFORE I GO INSANE.

To: Pat Willener

Noting shows in the test page, ( As expected )

THIS IS NOT A FIREFOX PROBLEM

I installed Opera yesterday, thinking that it was Firefox that was rejecting the flash plugin.

Well, just a few minutes ago, the Opera flash plugin disappeared also.

So, I opened Firefox, and it was gone there too !.

LETS SEE IF WE CAN FIX THIS !

All the contents of the system32 folder still intact.

Flash still listed in Windows installed programs.

Where do I get the MSVCP60.dll file required to run the windows permission fix properly?

The ball is in YOUR court !

I unzipped the contents of vcredist.exe to a temporary folder.

There I noticed 2 more EXEs

50comupd.exe = Checks version of "Common Controls"  - Mine was OK

PreSetup.exe  = Does not execute

I also noticed VCRedist.inf.

So, I installed from this file.

Did a search for MSVCP60.dll, and was properly placed in system32.

Rebooted

I executed the SubInACL batch file fix.

No errors.

Rebooted

Ok, so time will tell if this fixes my problem.

The uninstaller does not execute on my system ...

System error popup  ... screenshot here

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hTxsVQRdEp5jINARbzZVkNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink

The procedure entry point SetDllDirectoryW could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

I have tried this uninstaller many times before ... never worked on my W2k computer.

I did not do a re-install after running the fix.

It clearly says "if you were not able to install ... do so now "

I only re-booted.

Please be specific in the steps, and I will execute them.

As per your last comment on that topic ...

Apparently, W2K users are not important anymore.

Yes, W2000 is old, and MS does not support it.

However, they still have all the Service Packs and fixes available on thier website.

This computer I'm writing with to you now, is the MOST RELIABLE COMPUTER I EVER BUILT.

( I did a Dual Boot with W7, and the OS would not install with the hardware.)

My W7 x64 computer has had 3 motherboard failures in 4 years.

( I stated in my OP that I am unable to replace it now )

Your support staff should be able to dig up the old un-installer that works for W2K, and leave a link for those who still have working W2K computers.

( Or include the uninstaller in the ZIP file archives )

It is possible to find old uninstaller versions, but they won't work with new Flash Player versions.  Each released uninstaller only works with the current version at the time, and all previous ones, but not with future versions.

This post http://forums.adobe.com/message/4427736#4427736 contains detailed instructions how to change that dll, so that the uninstaller/installer works on Windows 2000.

W2K was a very stable OS, and I have until very recently used it on my laptopc computer.  Hadn't it broken down, I would probably still be using it.  But on the other hand, I would not be able to use more and more software, like the latest Firefox, Google Earth, Picasa, and whatnot.

Developers want to move forward with new technologies, and keeping old technologies in the software will make them unnecessary large, and likely less performant.

PCs have a limited lifespan, and the likelyhood that W2K is still used becomes less and less.  I am sure that XP will continue to be supported by many software vendors for quite some time to come, but even XP will some day fade out.

Ok, so I created a uninstaller HACK that is invokable.

However I did not run it yet.

I need you to be specific in the steps that you beleive will fix my problem.

From what I interpret, you want me to :

1. Run the uninstaller HACK.

2. Re-boot

3. Remove any files remaining that the uninstaller was suposed to remove.

4. Re-boot

5. Run the permisions fix batch file.

6. Re-boot.

7. Install Flash.

8. Re-boot.

Maybe this problem is with validation certificates and ActiveX controls.

I also have this problem at MS.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/error-code-0x800b0109-...

There is no way to uninstall IE6, However if you re-execute the installer there is a option to re-install.

I have just re-installed IE6, and all its runtime componects.

But, I still have the error code in windows update.

Maybe I can write over IE6 with IE 5.5 on my OS install disk.
