1. Re: How to get PS5 to update smart image from an external tiff
Chris Cox Jul 21, 2012 11:20 AM (in response to Astara_)Changing the original file that you placed won't have any effect on the Smart Object - the content is embeded, not linked to an external file.
Double click on the Smart Object layer to open the child document for editing.

Layers > Smart Objects > Replace Contents...
You aren't limited to editing the contents of a Smart Object by opening it as a child document and editing that.
You can update a Smart Object with an external file, for example, an entirely new file or externally edited version of the original TIFF. Right-click on the SO Layer in Layers Panel and pick Replace Contents... then select an external file with the usual file browsing window. The SO will be instantly updated and retain its Layer Style. You'll also find Replace Contents... in menu Layers>Smart Objects.

Astara_ Jul 21, 2012 5:59 PM (in response to conroy)Ah...maybe the replace contents will work for what I want...
Thanks for the pointer.... I wasn't sure how to just update the inner object... (actually it's buried in another SO...
as the text was black, so first SO was just to get color right, then apply effects..when tried to mix them didn't get the result I wanted -- also found out that I had to use flattened image, or things like textures on the original
didn't resize or rehape the way the SO did...
But might be nice if there was an auto-update embedded content option, but I they only implemented that
option in illustrator...
I still find I want to do way too many illustrator things in photoshop, but couldn't begin to do all the photoshop things I do in illustrator -- not to mention illustrator's still only 32-bit in PS5 (dunnow about later)...

Double click on the smart object to open it. Edit it, then save, and it gets updated.
You might want to spend some time learning about the features in Photoshop.

Personally I like the way Smart Objects work just fine – no links to external files means they can’t be misplaced when transferring data.
And if one often receives and has to pass on data that can be quite the show-stopper.

Astara_ Jul 22, 2012 2:13 AM (in response to c.pfaffenbichler)I wouldn't suggest getting RID of the current method -- just adding the option for the file to be external. Then your personal tastes are suited and the product is more flexibile.

c.pfaffenbichler Jul 22, 2012 2:19 AM (in response to Astara_)Well, I have to pass on and receive data at times … I wouldn’t want the people whose images I have to process to even be able to misplace content that is needed.

8. Re: How to get PS5 to update smart image from an external tiff
Astara_ Jul 22, 2012 6:33 AM (in response to c.pfaffenbichler)But of course, you wouldn't be required to put it in a separate file, So either you hope they won't split apart your
psb/tiff with current tools to do that, or you send them a flattened image. But people will do what they want to do
if it is really their intent to commit mischief, no?

I’m afraid intent is not necessarily the issue, ignorance and stubborness might achieve results just as bad …
In any case I suppose if externally linked images (if such a feature were implemented) were not only included as the transformed result but at least also embedded as the full resolution flattened version that might be insurance enough to avert the worst cases.
