P Spier Jul 24, 2012 10:23 AM (in response to Mark McCracken)If you use styles in Word you can map those styles to styles in ID or import them by showing import options when you place the word file, but in general you really want to do the formatting in ID where you have much more control.

If that's the worst I could see after importing a Word file, I'd be a happy man.
InDesign is not a tool to "clean up" or "professionally process" Word files with -- it's an entirely different program. You can import plain text from Word into InDesign, and anything else that comes along should be considered a bonus. (Except for the weird things that come along.)
You should be prepared to re-do significant portions of the formatting in InDesign.
