If you locate a jpg file in windows explorer you should be able to: -
Right click
Select "Open With"
Select a program from the list or "Choose Default Program"

pwillener Jul 25, 2012 6:40 PM (in response to Mark McCracken)Where is that target jpeg located - on the Internet or Intranet?
What is the hyperlink protocol - http? If so, it will open it with the default browser.

Mark McCracken Jul 26, 2012 4:06 AM (in response to pwillener)Pat,
The target jpeg is located on a shared server. I did the following to create the hyperlink: highlighted text in InDesign document --> chose Create hyperlink form the Hyperlinks panel --> In the New Hyperlink dialogue box I chose 'Link To' file , to set the destination I browsed to the jpeg located on the shared server, I did not check the shared destination box and I did not specify any hperlink appearance options. When I click on the newly created hperlink in the InDesign document the jpeg opens with the expected default program, however the same link in the exported pdf opens with the internet browser. Note in the Indesign document I have a differnt hyperlink which is to a Word document on the same shared server and when I click on the hyperlink in the exported pdf it opens with Word. Where to I check the internet protocol and can it be changed.
Thanks

pwillener Jul 26, 2012 6:12 PM (in response to Mark McCracken)In Adobe Reader, if you hover the pointer over the hyperlink, you should be able to see the actual link (with the protocol http: or file: at the beginning).
How to change a hyperlink you should ask in the Indesign forum.
