Why does Premier elements keep stopping working?

    Garth Ward Community Member

Premier elements keeps shutting down with a message saying that it has stopped working and will find asolution to the problem on line but it never connects with anything nor does it provide any answers.

What's your operating system and version of PSE?  Sometimes for windows system you may need an update from Microsoft website.

More information needed for someone to help... click these links and provide the requested information... these questions may, on the surface, be for a different product... but the information you need to supply is the same

Thank you for your response. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium and the my problem is with Premier elements 10. I also have Photoshop Elements 10.

The error occurs when I am editing the transitions.

I have uninstalled the programme and then installed it again and restarted the computer between each of these activities.

I have not installed any updates since I have only been notified of one which when installing the update told me to close down an '???.exe' file. Which I did not know how to do (why would I?) No other programmes were open and my attempt to close the Adobe Premier logo made the update disappear.

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?

When you started your Premiere Elements project, which project settings did you select?

If you selected the ideal settings for your video, you should see NO red lines above your clips when you add them to your timeline -- and you should have no performance problems. Is this the case in your project?

In an earlier response I should have said that I use Windows 7 64bit.

                      I use a Sanyo Xacti GC6 digital movie camera. MPEG4 640 x 480 pixels (can be a whole range up to 3680x 2760) Approx 6 million pixels.

I chose the project settings closest to my camera at 30 frames per sec. I have no red lines above my clips.

Just now it came up with the same stopped working message even before the project was fully loaded, but on second try the project has opened.

That 640 x 480 Video Source Footage is not ideal, and the overly-large Stills ARE a problem.

See this ARTICLE for details on Scaling Still Images.

                        Good luck,

Thank you Bill Hunt for your article etc. I bought my new toy and was looking forward to playing with it, I didn't realise that I would have to take a degree in digital photography and software!!

I thought that 640x480 were small not large files. Presumably the video clips I am using are an even bigger problem.

Many thanks for trying to help.

Thank you John Smith for your reference. It is comforting to know that I am not alone with my Sanyo Zacti - however, I have a standard version not a HD camera.

One of the tutorials says "Premier Elements have done a really good job with the presets." I think that they have done a poor job. I thought that an Adobe product would be able to cope with all cameras in the market place at the time of issuing the software.

Thanks for trying to help but I doubt that I will be able to understand what to do - however, it provides some ideas.

                              Garth,

What has happened is that recently, some camera mfgrs. have broken from long-established "standards," regarding their video output. We see more of this with less-expensive stills cameras, that also shoot video.

For decades, the standards for SD (Standard Definition) Video has been:

                              NTSC:

720 x 480 Standard 4:3 with a PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) of 0.9 (pixels are taller, than wide).

720 x 480 Widescreen 16:9 with a PAR of 1.2 (pixels are wider, than tall).

                              PAL:

720 x 576 Standard 4:3 with a PAR of 1.06 (pixels are wider, than tall, but not by much).

720 x 576 Widescreen 16:9 with a PAR of 1.422 (pixels are wider, than tall).

                              768 x 576 Square Pixel w/ a PAR of 1.00

With Stills, which usually use Square Pixels, the size of 640 x 480 works fine, but with Video, the cameras used non-square pixles, in the appropriate PAR. Camera mfgrs. got lazy, and just decided on their own, that they would not bother creating Video with rectangular pixels, like the video standards, and just use the 640 x 480 w/ PAR of 1.0.

Now, PrE 10 was coded, before this became so popular. It is also built around video standards, with output, such as DVD-Video the main focus.

If enough camera mfgrs. have begun producing cameras, that create video at the 640 x 480 w/ PAR = 1.0, then I feel that Adobe will include that Project Preset, and maybe as soon as PrE 11, due out in a few months.

PrPro handles such things differently, in that it offers a Custom Project/Sequence Preset, which allows the user to match the Project/Sequence to odd footage in most attributes. However, PrE does not offer such, and only addresses more standard formats. I have filed Feature Requests for that Custom Preset for about 5 years now, but so far, no-go. As PrPro costs about 6x what PrE does, there WILL be some differences between the two programs, and so far, this is one of them.

We will just have to wait and see what is introduced in the future - though by then, camera mfgrs. might go off on another tangent, and decide to use some other format and PAR for their cameras. Who knows?

Some users have had success at hacking PrE's Presets, to accommodate other formats (several such hacked Presets are listed in the Tips & Tricks sub-forum, with links to that work), but I have not seen one for 640 x 480 PAR = 1.0.

If one does mind either a bit of Scaling, and cropping of the Video Frame, or a little bit of distortion, they can use that footage in a Standard Preset, and just adjust it a little.

Good luck, and I hope that this explains why Adobe has not caught up to this deviation from the standards.

Many thanks Bill for a comprehensive, clear and understandable explanation of camera outputs.

                                  Garth,

You are most welcome, and one of the first thing that I will be looking for, upon the release of PrE 11, is the inclusion of this format as a Preset, since more and more camera mfgrs. are going that route. It's use is growing. Though I do not use it, I see so very many who do, and want them to have the best possible experience with it in PrE.

                                  Good luck,
