PrE-10 Will not start in Win7(x64)

    ShutterDug Community Member

I sincerely hope this is not redundant, but I have spent days on this forum looking for answers, but with no luck. I have seen many similar questions, but none of the 'fixes' proposed are relevant, or do not work for me.

      History:

I have been running PrE-10 since its release, on Win-7(32-bit). I recently had a system crash after installing Windows-8 Beta and had to wipe my hard drive and start from scratch. This time I loaded Win-7 (x64). All my original apps I had stored on an external drive. Some re-installed, some not. I had to re-download PSE-10, and PrE-10 as 64-bit apps.

PSE-10 and the associated Organizer, work fine as before. PrE-10 however does not start. I get the splash screen, with the options of NEW, OPEN and Organizer. Of these, only Organizer opens. The other two options either bring up a Windows Error box 'Pre-10 has failed to start', or it just sits and does nothing.

It is not a system limitation as I have far more than the requirements needed to run it and as I said, it worked fine in the 32-bit version, and nothing else has changed (that I have input), so I am baffled.

As I said, I have done many of the proposed fixes I have seen on the forum, if they are pertinent to my system, and even some that were not. I have now completed the reinstallation of most of my applications, and so far only PrE is causing a problem, but it is very important to me as I am working on a project that requires it.

I have done a Belarc report, but I do not see a link to upload it. I see links for images, videos, tables and weblinks, but nothing for files (pdf). I will attempt to load it as an image and see if this works. I do not want to post it as text or HTML as it is 7 pages long! (Nope, it does not insert). Perhaps someone can tell me how to upload the file.

          Is that an HP laptop?

Otherwise, unless I missed it, I do not see mention of your graphics/video card brand/model and driver number

Check the ATI or nVidia or ??? website to be sure you have a current driver

Also, for laptops... if that is what you have

Initial steps should be to check if you have the latest of everything.

Latest graphics drivers, latest version of quicktime. updated version of PRE.

Then you can try on a new admin account as it could be permissions issue.

That was the first thing I did after installing the OS. Aside from the 84 Win-7 updates, I went to every OEM site to be sure I had the latest, x64 compatible software and drivers. Thanks

Also, I run PrE as 'Administrator', no change.

I might have missed it, but as John T. Smith asked, do you have the HP fingerprint security feature turned ON?

This is frustrating! I just answered this post at length, but when I posted it it disappered!

Guess I have to start over and hope for the best!

                    Is that an HP laptop?

No, it is a desktop. However it is an HP 'hybrid'  all-in-one, and uses a lot of laptop hardware and software to keep the low profile case.

I read this and it does not apply to my system.

This is why I asked how to upload the Belarc report! Too much info to post.  Here is the Graphics info.

Check the ATI or nVidia or ??? website to be sure you have a current driver

Another interesting story, that! Nvidia/GeForce does an auto detect and correctly identifies the graphics card, and sends me to a link to upgrade the driver. The driver page says it is for Vista x64 and Win7 x64 (even its long name has 'win7-x64' in it). I download and attempt an install, and it comes back with "you are running Windows 7 64-bit. This driver is for Vista only. Installer closing." I went back and tried 4 other Win-7 x64 drivers, all reported the same thing, even though they state on the site they are for Win7 x-64. I then went to the Device Manager and tried to update the driver, but it reported using 'the most current driver available'. So I uninstalled the current Nvidia driver, which put me into VGA mode. I then went to Windows Update and did a search for updates. It found a missing Nvidia driver and called it 'Nvidia Driver for Win7 x64'. I downoaded and installed it and my system returned to normal 1440 x 900 display. I checked the driver info and it is the same driver as the original, including the release date, so apparently the original driver was in fact x64 compatible, and there does not appear to be an updated driver for it.

Also, for laptops... if that is what you have

It is not a laptop, but as it uses many laptop softwares and hardware, I will check these and see if they help. I will post the results.

                    Thanks for the help.

                      ShutterDug,

Sorry about the post disappearing. That has happened to me a few times recently, and it is a real bummer.

OK - no fingerprint security. Glad to hear that.

As for attaching a file, only a person with MOD capabilities can do that now, but your table shows all the info. Thank you.

The nVidia site only shows a Feb. 11, 2009 driver for the GeForce 7600 GO. It lists the OS as Vista-64, and Win7-64, and is probably the one that nVidia tried to get installed on your computer, but I could be wrong. Have you looked on the HP site, as some companies, like Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc., do issue new drivers?

Wish that I had more thoughts for you, and am surprised that nVidia does not have a newer driver, than 2009, but perhaps support for that card just no longer exists.

Good luck, and maybe others will have some useful ideas for you.

The frustrating part is that it worked fine under x86, and even though I downloaded and installed the x64 version, I get this issue. I have seen very many posts withthe same problem, and multiple suggestions to fix it. Some have reported success, others not, but it is apparently a consistent problem, and not unique to my system.

                        Thanks again

                        DN

Sorry about the post disappearing. That has happened to me a few times recently, and it is a real bummer.

                          Ca-ca happens!!

OK - no fingerprint security. Glad to hear that.

Not that I know of. I think my system is too old for that feature (2008)

As for attaching a file, only a person with MOD capabilities can do that now, but your table shows all the info. Thank you.

                          No Prob. (What is 'MOD'?)

I have long ago given up on HP. They no longer support this machine, and definitely will not support it with Win-7, stating it is 'not compatible'. I have been running Win-7 since its release with no problems (until this upgrade to x64). Until recently, HP had all of the updates for this machine, but as soon as I enter OS=Win7, the response is "No Updates Available." (Except for a Lightscribe app.)

Wish that I had more thoughts for you, and am surprised that nVidia does not have a newer driver, than 2009, but perhaps support for that card just no longer exists.

The 'funny' thing is that the nVidia/GeForce detection system identifies the card correctly (even provides a picture of it!) and tells me YES, there is an update, and sends me to it. The list of supported cards is below it, and my card IS on the list! But when I try to install it, it tells me it is for Vista ONLY! Just look at the nVida/GeForce info below and tell me this is not a contradiction!! This is screwy!

Nvida Scan.PNGThis is my graphics card

Nvida Scan3.PNGIt says it is for Windows7 64-bit

Nvida Scan2.PNGHere is my card on the list! So how is it for VISTA ONLY???

I wish I could install a 2009 driver!! 2009 would be NEW for me! Even Windows Update provides the same 2007 driver, but I have NO problems with it for any other display function, and I have pushed it to be sure. DVDs, streaming video, games, other video editors, photo editors, multiple browsers, everything I could think of to tax the graphics card, and it all works just fine... Except PrE-10 x64!

Good luck, and maybe others will have some useful ideas for you.

Thanks for the effort. I have a strong feeling that it is something very simple, right under my nose, but I am just not seeing the forest...

I can understand how this could be a problem, especially dealing with so many levels of computer knowledge (or lack thereof). Unfortunately, it would seem that it is the 'MODs' that ultimately pay the price, being the ones who are supposed to be fixing the problems. Difficult when log files and reports cannot be examined closely!

I am thinking I should just re-install my Win-7 32-bit OS, to end all this frustration!

Still trucking for now! It is becoming a 'challenge', and I don't like it when the machine wins.

Well I tried installing Premiere Pro CS6 to see if it would make a difference, but it does the same thing. Starts with splash screen, then stops.

The Adobe Media Encoder and Adobe Bridge CS6 work fine, as does the Organizer, just not the editors.

Does anyone know why the Cyberlink Power Director Plus x64, which is essentially the same program as PrE-10 x64, has no problem running its editor? Like PrE, it would not run the 32-bit version with my new 64-bit OS, so I downloaded the 64-bit version and it works fine. What is so 'special' about Adobe PrE-10 and PrPro CS6, that will not allow either to run on my 64-bit processor? Something in the registry perhaps? Some old settings it kept?

I saw somewhere in a readme file, that PrE-10 x64, runs in 32-bit mode on a 64-bit processor. If this is the case, then why won't the PrE-10 x86 run on a 64-bit processor?? Curiouser and curiouser....

I have tried every Adobe support link I can find, and they all inevitably lead back here! So the answer must be here, somewhere!

I have multiple projects in mid-production from the previous 32-bit version, otherwise I would just give it up and use PD Plus. To restart them all would be a loss of many weeks work!

                                  HELP!!

To avoid losing all your 64-bit apps you could install Win32 as dual boot - at least that way you will see if it will work for you.

                                      I am also running PE10 on Win7.

It was working fine for several months then last night I got exactly the same problem, although I had used it several times shortly before.

As soon as I click on the 'Additional bits' screen the interface stops loading and I am left with the monitor and Time Space/line.

I can click on the file, etc names on the top left of the screen but the program then locks up shortly afterwards.

Removed and re-installed it but to no avail.

Tried searching for upgrades but only found one for .raw files.

If I move the monitor, it leaves a trail of identical images behind it.

Well, I have quad core computer with 4gb ram running Win7 64 bit and it was working with some pretty big files then just stopped.

Once I reloaded it, I tried to start a new project in a different folder but exactly the same happened.

I put it in here because it was the only error which seemed to fit mine.

I have checked the drivers with System Mechanic and it reports that they are all up to date.

Is that the most recent driver for your card, and your OS?

If not, I would download and install the latest version. Check the installation notes, as some folk have found that just installing the newer drivers, over the older versions have been leaving broken "pieces" on the system, causing even more problems.

Check that out vs your Radeon and OS.

                                              Good luck,

Just installed all that - no change.

I've just uninstalled it and deleted all the relevant folders as well this time.

Will try a re-install again tomorrow, if that doesn't work it will get binned.

I see you have Spybot S & D installed. I installed it a few days ago, because of a pesky toolbar that was hijacking my home page, and forgot to uninstall it afterwards.

I was reminded of its presence though because my entire machine seemed slower and web browsing was agonising. Investigating running processes showed 'Tea Timer' eating at resources. This is the Spybot resident process and killing it restored the PC performance.

As a test I suggest you try disabling Spybot (and any other anti-virus, anti-malware products) and seeing if that helps. Certainly the two 'big name' anti-virus products are regularly determined as the cause of PRE problems.

                                                  [EDIT]

You actually appear to have four different versions of Spybot S&D installed. Maybe completely uninstal all the versions first and then try PRE. Then install the current version (1.6.2 I think) only.

Belarc - the Belarc report is actually an html file. You could try copying the source html and paste it into the discussion topic via the HTML mode (top right icon next to the spell checker). Best if you try it in the 'No response needed' sub forum first.

                                                  [/EDIT]

                                                  Cheers,
