1. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
SAFEHARBOR11 Aug 15, 2012 7:53 AM (in response to Krioni)In Edit > Prefs > General, you can check the box for "Default Scale to Frame Size" and then you don't have to do it manually, note this only works upon Import, so does not affect clips already imported. This scaling is happening "behind the scenes", so in Adobe Motion, it will continue to show 100% for size. If you wish to do some custom cropping of a clip (zoom/pan), then right-click that clip on timeline and uncheck Scale to Frame. This will blow up clip to original dimensions, then you can use Motion > Scale to customize the cropping, using keyframes if you choose to animate the motion.
Question 2: The 150% figure sounds correct since 1280 x 1.5 = 1920.

Krioni Aug 15, 2012 8:11 AM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)Edit?Prefs?General? Preferences are in Premire Pro->Preferences
What's Adobe Motion? Do you mean After Effects? It is kinda confusing when using different names, sorry, I don't want to be mean.
I wasn't really asking about that in the Question 1. I'm just wondering if it looses quality, because when I do what I wrote (which I prefer than defaul scaling to frame) it shows 100%, instead of 66.67%

3. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
SAFEHARBOR11 Aug 15, 2012 8:26 AM (in response to Krioni)I'm on PC, so must be different menus on a Mac, sorry.
Select any clip on timeline and go to Effects Panel, and "Motion" is a default effect for scaling and moving.
If you use "Scale to Frame" to put 1080 clips into a 720p or SD sequence, the quality should be no different than if you brought the clip in and used Motion > Scale to resize.
That said, if you wish to use Motion to Pan/Zoom the larger clip in the smaller sequence, then I would recommend disabling "Scale to Frame" first, so that you get the full benefit of the larger pixel count of source clip.

4. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
Krioni Aug 15, 2012 10:04 AM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)Hey, thanks for the answer.
So what you write is, if I use "Clip->Video Options->Scale to Frame Size" option, I will drop quality of the original footage, when after using that option I will bring some clip to 1080p?

Thanks

6. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
Krioni Aug 15, 2012 10:19 AM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)OK, so...
I have a lot of footage.
I have to deliver final video in 720p.
Some of the footage is in 1080p, some in 720p.
I will use the option "Clip->Video Options->Scale to Frame Size."
I will zoom in a clip "X" which was filmed in 1080p.
Question:
After that process, will I lower the quality of the clip "X"?

7. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
SAFEHARBOR11 Aug 15, 2012 10:24 AM (in response to Krioni)As discussed earlier, IF you plan to use SCALE to manually crop a clip, then first turn off the "Scale to Frame" for that clip so you are starting with the full resolution and go from there. I'm assuming when you say "zoom in a clip" this means you will use Motion > Scale manually to adjust cropping of image (zoom/pan).
If you are asking if simply using Scale to Frame loses quality, then I'd say no. You obviously lose resolution going from 1080 to 720, but image is not "degraded" per se.

8. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
Krioni Aug 15, 2012 10:33 AM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)Ok, thanks. I am so confused about what you are writing. Again, I don't want to be mean. I think is my language barrier.
What I need that for is, I do not want to scale (Using Motion->Scale) each clip separately. I want to do it for all clips, and if I need to SCALE UP MANUALLY (zoom in - Motion ->Scale) I don't want to loose quality (I don't want to degrade the image).
All what was confusing for me the most, was that when used option "Clip->Video Options->Scale to Frame Size" the size of the clip in Motion->Scale would still be shown as a 100%, when it's 66.7%
Thanks again

9. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
Harm Millaard Aug 15, 2012 11:53 AM (in response to Krioni)Put it simply, if you start with a resolution of X x Y and you DECREASE the resolution to something smaller, you don't lose quality, but if you INCREASE the resolution to something larger, you lose quality. So
1920 x 1080 DECREASED to 1280 x 720: No quality loss
and
1280 x 720 INCREASED to 1920 x 1080: Serious quality loss.

10. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
Krioni Aug 15, 2012 7:43 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I think there is misunderstanding Mr. Milaard. I'm not converting anything. I'm scaling down, and than scaling back up. The same project, the same sequence in Premiere Pro. I think, according to what we write here, there is no quality loss.

11. Re: "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?
Harm Millaard Aug 15, 2012 11:19 PM (in response to Krioni)I'm scaling down (no quality loss), and then scaling back up (serious quality loss). So your end result is a serious quality loss.

Jeff has it technically right, but missed part of the question.
I believe the remaining part of the question is "How do I set every 1080 frame to 67% so I can use that as a starting point? All at once."
Answer: Set one clip to 67%. Copy that clip. Then, select all of the other clips and "Paste Attributes". Now all of them will be set at 67% and if you decide to zoom in to 100% you will have no quality loss.
Be sure to do that before you change any other attributes of that clip. If you have, don't worry. Just turn off that effect temporarily so you can copy just the motion effect

Krioni Aug 16, 2012 6:22 AM (in response to Steven L. Gotz)@Steven L. Gotz,
I love you!
(no gay)
Thanks. That's exactly what I tried to write. Hope the next time I will be more precized.
Thank you. Have a good day!
