I am currently using a GE Force GTX 589 video card with CS5. I have updated the video drivers to the latest version but am still unable to "Enable OpenGL Drawing" When I do a shiftctlalt to "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File"  the "Enable OpenGL Drawing" box is checked and everything looks fine. However when I close the CS5 and reopen it the "Enable OpenGL Drawing" box is unchecked and turned off. Anyone have any suggestions to this issue?

Sounds like the "GPU Sniffer" is crashing, as it's supposed to.

            Read more about it here:

            http://forums.adobe.com/message/4289204

            The GPU Sniffer

To help guard against Photoshop crashes related to bad GPU hardware or drivers, Photoshop employs a small program called the GPU Sniffer. Every time Photoshop is launched, Photoshop launches the sniffer. The sniffer runs rudimentary tests of the GPU and reports the results to Photoshop. If the sniffer crashes or reports a failure status to Photoshop, Photoshop will not use the GPU. The Use Graphics Hardware checkbox in the Performance panel of the Preferences will be unchecked and disabled.

The first time the sniffer fails, Photoshop will display a dialog indicating that it has detected a problem with the GPU. On subsequent launches the dialog will not appear unless the Photoshop preferences are reset.

If the user corrects the problem, either by replacing the video card or by updating the driver, then the sniffer will pass on the next launch and the Use Graphics Hardware checkbox will be enabled and returned to its previous state (enabled or disabled).

            [emphasis added]

Hello, it seems that either the video card, or rather its drivers are not supported.

Could you post the contents of help>system info (remove your serial number) so that we can see what is the driver version?

Or better, try to update your Graphic card drivers.

Has Adobe addressed the optimum set-up for Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom V4 when they are used together?  I have less problems with slowness and crashes when I run either program on its own but when I have them both open the system really slows down.

Optimum?  How do you define that?

In general, at any given time you need next year's computer model, maxed-out with the best possible hardware resources.

hey , i have Photoshop cs6 and i have a video card of 2GB (nvidia gt 6450) and a 16GB RAM and i7 processor (3.4MHz) and i have the latest version of my drivers and i also ensured that " use graphic processor " sign is checked and use " OpenGl " , yet when i press create in the 3D panel it tells me " the 3D feature require that " use graphic processor is enabled " in performance preference . your video card must meet the requirements and you may need to check that your driver is running correctly ."

so what should i do to enable this feature

N.B. : when i press the 3D button in the type tool panel it changes the text into 3D but i cant rotate or move it

and it opens some 3d files i have easily with no problems

I cannot find any reference to a "nvidia gt 6450".  I suspect you've either made a typo or confused two different brands.

What version of display driver do you have, specifically.

You can find this information in the Photoshop Help - System Info display.

I am building a new PC for PS CS6. I have  been getting some feedback on a couple forums that seems to contradict what I have read here.  "For best performance, scratch disks should be on a different drive than any large files you are editing." Also, "Scratch disks should be on a different drive than the one your operating system uses for virtual memory.

I have assumed from these statments (and other sources on the web) that a separate drive or partition is best for a scratch disk. I had, therefore, planned on dedicating small SSD (64 GB) as a scratch disk and a larger SSD (256 GB) as a system disk (OS and apps).  Responses to this arrangement have been negative.  It was suggested that a 64 GB SSD is  too small to be effective (small drive = slow read/wtrite times), Windows likes to run everthing off C drive and I should stripe two  256 GB SSDs in Raid 0 and point every thing towards C drive.

So now I am confused.  What am I missing?

The advice to have a seperate scratch disk is based on physics.  A HD only has one read/write head.  So it can not be in two spots at the same time.  This makes a partition no better than nothing.  So you want seperate disk drives so the program can be reading on one and the scratch can be writing on the other at the same time.

Since an SSD does not have a read/write head the above does not apply, and you can have everything on the same drive if large enough.  Since the SSD is like a large flash drive the read/write times are extremely fast.

The size of your scratch disk needed depends on what type of editing you do and the size of the file.  One  suggestion is to have the scratch disk 100 times larger than your largest file.

If you do not do anything too serious 64 gig might work, but you would be cutting it close.

I don't know where you get the idea that flash drives are fast. Do you own one?

My 64GB Sandisk is glacially slow even compared to USB 2. About the same speed as a cable modem.  As Chris said in another thread, huge RAM is the future. I can remember an old PC with I think DOS 5 that had enough memory to make a RAM disk big enough to be useful.  For the 90s that was really really fast.

Apps are so damn big now that my measly 8Gb couldn't support the OS and a RAM disk. If I put in another 8 GB, maybe. My next box if I ever get one will have 64 or 128.

Not huge RAM - huge non-volatile memory.

SSDs are flash based, and use an SATA or PCIE interface.

The non-volatile memory will get faster, and the interface will change to get out of the way.

Maybe if it's fast and cheap enough, the new non-volatile memory will replace RAM.

It's an important point to note that the controller in an SSD isn't by any means simple; it's almost more like a file server attached with a networking (SATA) connection vs. a disk drive, which is traditionally kind of dumb and just does what the computer tells it to.  This is necessary in part to conform to the existing legacy SATA protocol, and also to manage the different nature of flash memory (i.e,. that a block has to be erased before being written-to, and that erasure takes a loooong time, not to mention wear leveling).

                                  -Noel

If one is planning to put scratch on an HD and situations dictate combining scratch with a storage drive then absolutely partition and put the scratch first. An HDD reads like an LP record, starting at the outside edge. It also runs at a steady RPM, like an LP. Therefore the speediest read/write will be at the beginning (as any test of an HDD confirms). The partition is advised to keep scratch free of fragmenting, which does become a factor if scratch is merely part of an overall disk.

If the 64G too small is based on an SSD, then I see the logic. But for an HDD scratch, I run just under 40G and have jet to use 1/2 of that. My files can exceed 1.5G

NO!   I would say do not partition a drive.

Partitioning it virtually GUARANTEES inefficiency as the head has to seek back and forth to access things on the different partitions, and seeking is bad.  Are you postulating that the increased data rate because the data is on the outside edge of the drive overcomes the seek overhead under some conditions (e.g., if no other data is accessed on the other partition simultaneously)?

Also, pooling the free space seems better than forcing a limit, in exceptional circumstances where Photoshop wants to create a truly huge scratch file.

Why would you want to separate a scratch volume from other data on the drive?  The one thing I've not seen Photoshop do is corrupt a scratch drive.

The theory is that a partiton for a scratch drive will reduce fragmentation on the drive, due to the constant read/write by confining it to one partition.  Not sure there is any science there, as many have the scratch on C and don't see any problems.

Scratch is on a physical drive I use for legacy storage. If a file on that drive is called up for editing, it is moved to the Edit drive, which has only one partition. I am cognizant of the drive seek problems, which is why I do what I do. After all, there are only so many sata connections as well.

So there is no simultaneous seek functions going on at least over 90% of the time. What's to seek from long term storage?

Windows has been defragging its own drives automatically on Wednesday morning for years now.

Of course, quitting PS "should" delete the file and therefore, defrag is not needed. Certainly, if one leaves PS on and the drive builds up fragmentation can set in. So far, it hasn't been an issue here. Works nicely.
