    Upper Field Encode Issues...

    Eric Addison MeganK

I've got a project in Premiere Pro that's using ProRes upper field footage (1080 60i), and when I send the timelines over to Encore CS6 to build the DVD, it looks like Encore is encoding lower field first as the titles a the opening have some aliasing - they look fine in Premiere Pro.

Doesn't Encore automatically encode based on the properties of the footage? I didn't change any of the transcode settings in Encore - just did a Transcode Now for all the clips.

The MPEG2-DVD  default appears to be field order based on source. Try setting it to the field you want.

          Are you cropping?

            No - no, cropping.

And that's what I thought about the defualt MPEG2-DVD setting...I thought it would read field order from the source.

But here's the situation (and I FULLY realize this is NOT the best way to go) but...I've got 260 minutes of video to put on 1 Dual Layer DVD. Instead of trying to do all the math on bit rates, I figured I'd let Encore do that math. I'm hoping that the client will see that this needs to be broken up over 2 DVDs, but that's another issue.

When you bring in the timelines from PPro, and use the Transcode Now allowing Encore to automatically figure things out, that's where things may be going wrong. You can't (as far as I can find) adjust any of the Automatic settings. If you want to customize your transcode settings, you can, but then Encore won't be doing the bit-rate math to make everything fit - you will. I can find a dialoghue box that lists the automatic settings, but I can't adjust them - they are grayed out. Check under the Default Transcode Settings in the Project settings window...can adjust anything in the Video Transcode section...it looks like you can somehow, but they are grayed out. And this looks like exactly where I need to change things.

I believe you are correct; there are no choices for what you want to control in automatic.

I would pick a manual transcode setting for a single timeline, to test your idea that setting the field order there will fix it.

Ann has referred to a field reversal issue that I thought was fixed in CS6.

You can try a cheat, and look at a transcoded file re the datarate; then use that for your manual settings.

My understanding is that older versions of Encore "forced" LFF encoding, but CS6 now supports UFF for NTSC DVDs. So if you encode an MPEG-2 with UFF in AME or another app, and import into Encore CS6, the default settings still say "Lower Field", but it does NOT transcode the footage, so you ought to be able to create a UFF DVD if you want to...if using CS6, not older.

Thanks, guys, for the repsones. That was my understanding too, Jeff, but I think where my problem lies is that when you have Encore do the transcode using the Automatic Default settings (so that it can figure what the best bit rate is to fit all the video on the disc), it's not taking into account UFF - it's just transcoding into LFF.

I'm encoding now through AME to MPEG-2 DVD UFF, so hopefully this will sort it out.

So, just to report back - the encodes made in AME with UFF came out fine, and once burned to DVD play fine as well. Funny thing I noticed - when playing back in Encore, the titles looked bad...like it was getting the field order wrong, but once burned to DVD, it plays fine.

Might be time to file a bug report...
