1. Re: Disk for export
John T Smith Sep 3, 2012 7:59 AM (in response to Dvico)As far as I know, you should not use SSD for frequent writes

2. Re: Disk for export
Scott Chichelli Sep 4, 2012 7:32 AM (in response to Dvico)your export drives(s) should match your media drive
it would be pointless to have a super fast export if the media drive cant match its speed.
if you have raid 0 for media then you should have raid 0 for export etc.

3. Re: Disk for export
Dvico Sep 4, 2012 8:16 AM (in response to Scott Chichelli)My media drive 4*1 Tb Raid3.
Maybe I can put 2*1Tb Raid0 for export with raid controller(Areca), or 1*ssd (128Gb Samsung 830) with MOB sata3.These are almost a same cost.
But I dont know which is more reliable way? Especially with long time rendering.
Thanks.

4. Re: Disk for export
Scott Chichelli Sep 4, 2012 12:47 PM (in response to Dvico)Ideally the same as your media drive
Or make 1 large array for both (8 drives)

5. Re: Disk for export
Dvico Sep 4, 2012 11:58 PM (in response to Scott Chichelli)Scott! You say that, better to use more disk in raid to put export together with media drive?
My Areca controller 1882i, so I can use 8 disks.I use 2 drive in raid0 for media cache.
Still have 6 port. I can create 6 drive array in raid 3? This would be better like separate media drive and export ?

6. Re: Disk for export
Scott Chichelli Sep 5, 2012 5:21 AM (in response to Dvico)the more disks you have per array the faster it gets.
i would do either 4 drives in raid 5 (forget 3) x 2 sets or just one large 8 drive raid 5 (or 3 if you want to believe its better)
media cache drive is pointless. as is all other crazy drive assignments
you only need media drive and export drive. or 1 big array.
i dont recommmend 1 big array unless its 8 drives or bigger.
these benchmarks are over a yr old but the % difference remains the same.. raid 3 wouldbe the same as well (just longer rebuild times)
Intel SAS RS2BL080 8 Port controller with 512 DDR2 Ram
Single Drive - 101MB
2 Drive Raid 0 - 199MB
4 Drive Raid 0 - 399MB
3 Drive Raid 5 - 204MB
4 Drive Raid 5 - 310MB
8x WD 1TB SATA 6 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache, 7200 RPM
8 Drive Raid 5 - 703.8MB/s read 670MB/s Write

OH one omre thing regardless of redundat raid you need an ext back up.. raid array (5,6) as well)

Bill Gehrke Sep 5, 2012 5:59 AM (in response to Dvico)One big array sure makes it much easier to find your project assets, It is my favorite

8. Re: Disk for export
Dvico Sep 6, 2012 1:25 AM (in response to Bill Gehrke)Base on your advice I would test with 8 disk big array. Now I have 4 pcs Samsung spinpoint F3 1Tb and 2pcs Seagate Barracuda 1Tb.I have to buy 2pcs more, but as I know better to use same type hdd-s in raid. This is also true when I use a raid controller ?

9. Re: Disk for export
Scott Chichelli Sep 6, 2012 6:32 AM (in response to Dvico)mixing in not a big problem. however none of the drives you have are enterprise drives
i would never do a raid 3,5,6 without enterprise. far too great a chance of tler error

10. Re: Disk for export
Dvico Oct 4, 2012 2:48 AM (in response to Scott Chichelli)Now I would buy that 2 more hdd ( Seagate Bararcuda 7200.14 1Tb) .Than I will have
4 * 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 + 4*1Tb Seagate Barracuda
.I connect them to Areca 1882I 8port raid controller.
The question is to create 2 set ( 4-4each) RAID5 or 1set ( 8pcs) RAID5.I would have problem to use this 2 different type together in RAID5 ?
In this way I will have this disk setup:
A:
- OCZ revodrive 160Gb - OS, programs
- 4*1Tb RAID5 : media cache, previews, page file, AE global perf, cache, + exports
- 4*1Tb RAID5 : media projects
B:
- OCZ Revo - OS, programs
- 8*1Tb - thre whole thing:-)
Thanks for your help!

11. Re: Disk for export
ECBowen Oct 4, 2012 7:20 AM (in response to Dvico)You can use different model drives in a raid however this can cause some issues with the controller handling the difference in firmware especially in a parity raid. I would not recommend it but it's up to you.
